Mountain Biking - Seat post choices ..worried & confused

I am in the market for a new seat post for the HT Gary Fisher. I want something to take the edge off. I found some great deals on FSA SLK carbonposts $50 bucks and on a Chinese made, I am sure Titanium seat post both on e-bay. Question is has anyone experience seat post failure with carbon? The ti is more money not as light but I assume bomb proof? I am not a freerider but an old fella who likes XC riding...please help??

Any post can break, no matter what material it's made from. I've been riding a Carbon post on a hardtail since 05 with no issues. I reccomend a good two bolt clamp instead of a quick release.

I have a carbon FSA on my road bike (I know it's evil right) and I'm 210-215 but have been up around 230 and had no issues with it

if I ever replace it though I'm going Thompson.. realyl not much weight savings with the carbon vs a thompson

B2B is a good 270...you should have no issues.

Don't waste your money on a Thompson......Get a Thomson instead.

Yeah, but I seem to remember Thompson making UberCarbonCNT posts...Thomson uses crappy old aluminum.

I definitely agree. On all my bikes (5) the seatpost choice was one of the easier decisions to make, because the thomson is a no-brainer- light, bomber, functional, stiff, easy to adjust, and reasonably priced.

I bought a litespeed Owl Hollow HT in 98, ordered it with a Litespeed ti post, less than a year later I sheered it off at the seat collar. They warenteed it, the second post lasted 6 months, same failure. Fool me once...... Now I only ride Thomson - BTW I weigh a buck fitty.
