I'm going to order a P7 as soon as I decide which one.
Runtime is a factor so I want a 2 x 18650 torch.
Should I buy the 'Aurora AK-P7-3 2 mode' or the 'MTE M4-2 SSC P7-C 5-Mode' ?
Or would one of the other P7 torches be a better bet ?
I don't really need more than 2 modes and I don't need 'flash' or 'sos'.
Low for in town and high for out of town would be plenty.
Also, should I get protected or unprotected cells ?
TIA.
Ultrafire WF-1000L is your best bet.

I'd say if run time is a factor then carry extra batteries. I think a 2x18650 light is going to be a little long. With that said, this is the light I'm using:
http://dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12060
You say you don't want flash or SOS, which this light has, but you don't have to use it. Click it on and it's on medium, which is great for most city streets. Push the tailcap momentarily twice and you've got low and high (don't push it to a full click, just about half way).

Why ?
I'm in the same boat - subscribing to thread! ;)
the only reason I have not pulled the trigger on a P7 light is runtime on Hi. I want a solid 2hrs with single 18650. 2 batteries is too big & heavy.
A fellow board member suggested this:http://cgi.ebay.com/SSC-P7-LED-Flashlight-900LM-MAX-Tactical-Swat-Torch-Set_W0QQitemZ390012442315QQihZ026QQcategoryZ106987QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem He says it's good quality, etc but only 8-90min before it starts to dim. And only ON or OFF.
how about it: any suggestions for a good quality, single cell, 2hr+ runtime light with Hi and a solid useable Lo?
Thanks!

Aren't 18650's nearly weightless? At least compared to the 3x NIMH AA's anyhow.
I'd be interested in a 2+ hour 2x18650 also. I may be hacking my MTE single to use an external 18650 pack shortly though. While medium on my P7 is better then my dinotte i'd like to use high on my whole commute and not have to worry about it cutting out in a bad area where I need it and would rather not stop to change it.

notice I'm after runtime as well... we're in the same boat! ;) How much runtime you after anyway? If you could get 2hrs on 1 batt would you be happy?
I hear rumors a well-built P7 can put out a solid 600+ lumen for 120min on a single hi-quality 18650...

Nope, I'd take 4 hrs on 2 batteries and change/charge the batteries less often.
Swapping the batteries every 2 days rather than every day would be great.
Less wear and tear on the threads too.
;)
From what I've seen, most here go with the single 18650 lights (much smaller), which can apparently put out a lot of light on medium for 3-4 hours.
First, how long do you need the light to last?
Let us know what you learn in your research. I've heard from others that the MTE lights are brighter than Aurora.
If you're handy, you can build your own battery pack (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?p=7736124#post7736124) for a P7.

Yes, I can.

No need to be rude. I am not trying to convince you either way. I obviously don't care what you decide. I was merely pointing out that you aren't getting many responses to your first post (which I obviously did read, hence my comparison of single-battery lights to dual-battery lights) because not many of us have purchased them. And, therefore, that's why I suggested that you share with us your research. Perhaps you will convince us why a dual-battery light would be a better choice.
Thank you.
Please let us know why you have decided on a P7 instead of a Cree MC-E.
Thank you.

Flood or throw?
Supposidly a solid thrower the new jetstream (http://www.bugoutgearusa.com/jetm1x.html)getting out now will take two 18650s with the cell extender. Too bad it'll run about $180 :( Yeah I know it is a MC-E (quad cree) and not a SSC P7 but intel amd blah blah

No offense intended :)
Just trying to keep the thread on tack.
I don't know which would be a 'better' choice, but if I'm going to have to carry around a spare battery it might as well be inside the torch. That way at least I won't have to stop to change it.
There must be someone who has bought a 2 x 18650 P7 ?

Please let us know why you have decided on a P7 instead of a Cree MC-E. Thank you.
I haven't decided as such, I can't say I know enough about the M-CE.
Having said that there does seem to be a lot more P7 threads than M-CE.
Is there an advantage to the M-CE ?

I posted a similar question in this thread: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=500489 As you will see, I didn't get many responses. The information I found using a few Google searches seemed to indicate that the Cree might be better, but I haven't found anything too conclusive.
Yes, there are a lot more threads on the P7, but I'm not sure why. I ordered one myself (a single-battery unit) based on the reviews on bikeforums, but I haven't gotten it yet.
Good luck!

However, I want a 2 x 18650 torch.
From following the P7 threads for a while....the consensus seems to be that the 2 cell torches (I will use the uk vernacular) are just too big and start getting in the way.
you can mount a 2x18650 torch on your stem using 2x velcro flashlight mounts.
WF-1000L, either P7 or MC-E, has lots of throw and does not suffer from overheating like the MTE model you posted. Aurora seems to have some questionable quality.
out of all the DX 2x18650 P7 and MC-E torches, the WF-1000L is the best one according to the reviews and forum on DX.
it also happens to have the biggest/tallest condensing lens compared to the aurora and MTE models.

If you are looking for max brightness and runtime, you are looking for the wolf eyes p7 sniper.. It puts out just under 600 lumens and will run for 2 hours+.. 1st hour is fully regulated.. Here is a review, but they are pricey compared to the chinese p7's..

No need to be so concerned over 2X18650 lights. They really aren't much heavier. The battery isn't heavy and the barrel is just a bit longer. Admittedly, the length makes them a bit harder to mount. I cut off a clamping water bottle cage to make a very strong mount.

After much contemplation I decided less is more and the fewer modes the better.
The ideal would be a torch with an On/Off switch and a separate High/Low so that I never have to go through 'Off' to get from 'Low' to 'High'.
These all have too many modes:
Aurora AK-P7-3 SSC P7-C 5-Mode $51.65 14212
EastwardYJ YJ-XFP7 SSC P7-C 5-Mode Memory $57.34 17591
MTE M4-2 SSC P7-C 5-Mode $59.87 14645
SacredFire SSC P7-C 5-Mode $56.90 17381
This leaves these torches:
Aurora AK-P7-3 SSC P7-C 2-Mode $50.02 14451
SacredFire NF-58 SSC P7-C $52.50 19374 - only 1800 mA
TrustFire SSC P7-C 1-Mode $53.37 12761 - very poor user comments
TrustFire HA-III GITD SSC P7-C $69.53 14412 - only one mode
UltraFire WF-900L SSC P7-C 3-Mode $56.89 14396 - lots of poor reviews
Taking everything into account and having read every comment on DX about all of these, the winner is the Aurora AK-P7-3 SSC P7-C 2-Mode.
Runtime tests and side by side comparison with the MTE M4-2 SSC P7-C 5-Mode to follow.....
I've also got some mounts to try:
15642 Universal Bicycle Mount for Flashlights and Gadgets (2cm~3cm Diameter Adjustable)
15342 Universal Bicycle Mount (22mm~32.8mm)
13004 Fenix Flashlight Bike Mount
*792 Flashlight Mount* - DO NOT under any circumstances buy this one - it's rubbish
Aurora AK-P7-3 SSC P7-C 2-Mode, batteries & charger ordered. :)

Does the beam really have a black hole in the middle ?
socalrider

If that is the beam pattern for that light I would look elsewhere, especially for a P7..
I bet that dark spot disappears when the flashlight is pulled just another foot away from the wall.

Let us know how this clip works. I'm using the good ole innertube method for mounting right now, but I wouldn't mind something a bit more solid if it would fit my romisen rc-n3

I'm using that mount with a single 18650 Cree Q 5 light, very solid mount, though I did have to put an old part of a road bike innertube around the body of the light to make it good and snug.
