I am 43 y/o and have just started riding again after about 15 years. I rode with a group for the first time and met a guy who happened to mentioned he was a cat 3 rider/racer? I am only just a bit familiar with this lingo and understand that the fastest is a 1 and the entry level is a 5. Can someone give me a quick and skinnny on this issue? What do you have to do to jump in and be a 5? How fast does one have to be to be a 3? A 1? Thanks muchly!

To be a 5 all you have to do is pay your money and wait for your license to arrive.

You then move through the ranks by earning points based on placing well in races.

5 - 4:
Experience in 10 mass start races;

4 - 3:
Need 20 points in any 12-month period;
or experience in 25 qualifying races with a minimum of 10 top-10 finishes.
30 points in 12 months is an automatic upgrade

3 - 2:
Need 25 points in any 12-month period
60 points in 12 months is an automatic upgrade

2 - 1:
Need 30 points in any 12-month period
60 points in 12 months is an automatic upgrade

And here I thought it was based on age and speed. The younger and faster ones were Cat 1/2 and the older, slower riders Cat 5. Thanks for clearing that up.

witemax I don't meen to steal your thread but I think this is at least in the same boat.

Laggard,
Let me ask you this. I want to attend a race this weekend that has no cat v only iv and below as well as masters. I have searched this forum a lot on this subject as well as read the uscf book which has the exact info you have above. But I still don't know if I am cat iv or not? Is cyclocross considered mass start cause if so I had done 8 of those last year. I raced in men's C which I presume is cat v. They said if you get 3 1st places that you bump up to men's B regardless of how many races you have done. Well I took 2 first places and a 1st in the overall series. So with that resume can I convince the promoter of this race to let me ride cat iv or is it very cut and dry by the book, NO I need two more mass start? btw it took for ever for me to get my license and I finally did last week after 4 months. In the meen time I was using the reciept that I purchaced at a race as a license. But it says cat 5 on my license. Would it have to say cat 4 on it even though by the time you get the damn thing it's months latter? also btw my racing age on the license is 35. Can I race masters or does even a masters have to go through the cat v rank first? I tried emailing the promoter but got no response, I will try calling later today but any help is appreciated. Thanks.

As far as I know, you are automatically considered a master due to your age. You can still enter senior races. You still start as a 5 and work your way up.

If you really want to race with the 4s at this race you can plead your case to the USCF official in attendance. Bring as much documentation as you can and he/she may grant you an upgrade on the spot.
