Road Cycling - FSA Crankset / campagnolo drive train compatable???

I currently have a 2003 Campagnolo Record drive train including front and rear derailleur and record crank. I would like to upgrade to the record carbon fiber Crankset; however this is way out of my price range. The FSA pro super light looks very simmilar to the record crankset; so I would like to put this on my bike in order to save money. My question is will this work with my campagnolo derailleurs, and will I need a different bottom bracket. thanks for the help.

You will probably need a new BB. I believe the FSA Carbon Pro Team cranksets only come in either ISIS or OctaLink. However, they work just fine with Campy Record. I would certainly choose FSA cranks over Campy cranks anyways.

I've been using Record Ergo brake/shift levers and Record front & rear derailleurs with the top end FSA crankset w/ti bottom bracket for a couple of seasons (Whipperman chain and Cycle Dynamics ti cog-set complete the drive-train). It performs well and has been reliable. Like you I would have liked to have had a Campy Record carbon crankset, but the FSA is lighter & less expensive, works fine, and looks almost as good. However, I started out with the FSA crankset when I built up the frame. I'm not so sure that any FSA crankset is an "upgrade" over your Record crankset. Given that little of what most of us spend on our bikes is justified anyway (And I'm more guilty than most), I'm still a bit awed that anyone would consider what you're considering.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I would not concider the FSA crank an upgrade, however I love the look of carbon cranks, so in my eyes it is an upgrade. Thanks again for all of the help.

To add to what the others have already stated, FSA Superlight cranks work just fine with Campy 10. I have the Superlights with the ISIS spline bottom bracket running with a Record drivetrain. The shifting is excellent and it takes some weight off of the standard alloy Record crank set-up, not that it makes a big difference.

changing the bottom bracket is one of the best reasons to upgrade to a fsa crankset. the campy bbs/cranksets are still square-taper, but the fsa will let you use a isis splined bb. the difference between square and splined bbs is quite noticeable. i swapped out the centaur crankset/bb on my cyclocross bike for a fsa gossamer crankset and isis bb last year, and the improvement in bb stiffness was quite amazing.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Campy now has Carbon cranks in both its
Record and Chorus lineups. The Chorus Carbon is alot less expensive than
the Record but still fairly costly.
