Our local maven of women's cycling (http://www.velogirls.com) has a six-week program of coaching workshops, clinics, and training rides that culminate in you racing in a road race. It sounds like a great way to take your cycling to the another level. So if you're interested, check it out here:

I felt pretty green going into the world of road racing and would have loved a six-week program to get some training (with a team) under my belt. After participating in the fast pace thrills of the Early Bird crits I'm hooked and am really psyched there's such a program, even if it's only for girls.

hey, thanks Henry!

Henry asked me why I don't have a program like this for men. I've been asked that a lot over the years, and the most compelling reason is that I don't know if there's a market for it. but now I've got some male coaches on staff and I'm re-visiting the idea. I mentioned to Henry that I could put a program like this together for all you newbie men racing from NorCal Bike Forums.

If you're a man and this sounds interesting to you, ping me.

the big question is, "would you wear hot pink?"

I might be interested, depending on the cost and time commitment.

I would be more interested in a time-trial event. Something without pacelines. I don't like pacelines on public roads because I don't want to crash because of someone else's error and I don't want my error to cause someone else to crash.

I think it's 2 days a week for six weeks.

OK now, let's not forget, the program is to allow the ladies to dip their toes into the world of bike racing and team tactics.

If any of you dudes want to have such a program now is the time to speak up.

the response from the ladies has been overwhelming. if you plan to come to the info meeting on Wednesday, please RSVP so I'm certain to have enough room for everyone.

gentlemen? any interest there?

Good to hear that there's interest from the girls. I hope to see some Cheetahs out there.

OT:

I'm still trying to decide about joining a team. Not that any of them would have me, but closest option for me is PenVelo but I don't know anyone currently on the team. Alto Velo is a bit further and I know a few of their BF reps. I've ridden with a handful of Roaring Mice. I really liked Dylan from Berkeley Bicycle Club but that's pretty far. Even if a group of us BF dude/ettes started something, we're dispersed enough to make regular training rides spotty.

Any suggestions?

I just don't have the killer mentality and fearlessness required for a race. I have ridden in packs for training rides for Penn Velo, Alto Velo, LGBRC, and even in SoCal in the weekly Montrose pack rides ... but I just can't get over the crashes that are part of racing in criteriums. Yeah, I'm a wimp, and proud of it, damn it!

Blast, go ride with the various clubs, go to a meeting, and see where you find a good fit. Every club is different, has a different culture, focus, benefits, etc.

Pen Velo -- in the past few years has focused on masters. I love the guys and the rides are very convenient for you. Smaller club so you're not just a number.

Alto Velo -- big, big, big.

Berkeley -- not as active as they used to be but I think they're one of the oldest clubs in the NCNCA. Not particularly geographically desireable for you, though.

Roaring Mouse -- building a road presence. Had been focused on mountain and cyclocross. Good programs, not sure if they're an open club -- contact Ben Stern. But, you have to wear yellow!!!!

Velodiva and I reviewed several of the clubs and chose Alto Velo.

You can belong and do NOT have to race.

We liked the team kits and the benefits belonging to the club

There a several women racers who compete. Other clubs are generally mostly men with few, if any women

At races, there are a couple to several AV riders in each category

The meetings offer great speaker and we get a lot of useful information from the AV forum

The group rides start at Peet's in Los Altos, but in general, we do not participate since we train with Five Rings Cycling

We race at the track and train with our AV guys.

No matter what club you join, you can still do a Penn Velo, AV and etc group rides.

You just cannot do the Velogirls rides:D
