I'm planning to do some touring on my hardtail throughout the wild west and was hoping people had some experience with good 26 in. tires for mostly paved road and some dirt road touring. The catch is that I plan to ride singletrack at times and therefore need a folding road tire that I can pack up when I put my knobbies on. I've done some research and seem to find that the best touring tires mostly have wire beads. Any suggestions?
Also, any experience with 26 x 1.0? (I'm using mavic xc717 rims)
I have used 26 x 1.0" tires before but found I prefer a slightly wider tire 1 1/4 to 1 1/2" for the greater comfort, dependability, and also greater availability/selection.
The Schwalbe Marathon XR HS 359 is available in a 1.6" folding bead and has generally good reviews. Continental also has the Travel Contact and some other folding bead 26" tires that might fit your needs. Also don't forget, you can "fold" a wire beaded tire as well.

Agreed: no problem folding a beaded tire. I sometimes carry one between my rear rack side supports and the Ortlieb. You don't even see it unless you look for it.
