My brother got an iPhone. I scoffed. Then I played with it. Pretty cool. It'd be nice to have gmail and gmaps along with pandora on the road. The trouble is I'm with Verizon and don't particularly want to change. There are 4 phones on my plan. Mine, my wife's and my mom and dad's. They don't care much what they have as long as it functions, but I'd like to do email, etc. I'm not sure if there is an economical way of going about doing this (cell phones are a luxury, after all), but what would be your choice if you were in my shoes?

Thanks foosters

I just got the LG Dare. It's a touch screen and has web access. It's a decent phone but not as nice as the iPhone. My daughter has a Blackberry Pearl and she likes it for emailing and texting all of her friends. If you only have a voice plan with Verizon you will need to get broadband access for the web phones. The Blackberry is $30 per month and the Dare is $15.

I got my daughter a Voyager for her birthday last week and it reminded me of the iPhone except its got a pop open keyboard as well as the touch screen. Seems pretty nifty but I still like my Treo 700.

HTC Touch Pro. Touch screen, slide out qwerty keyboard, windows mobile (only downside) so it runs outlook, media player, has full HTML browser, is fast, email, all the bells and whistles.

No, it is Windows Mobile...

Yeah it is a windows mobile operating system. Unlike the iPhone, which I have, u can not only open word and excel documents, but also edit them. It uses media player so any file that will play on a windows PC, will play on the phone as well.

Sorry I know next to nothing about these gizmos. I assume with this you just subscribe to a data plan and are done with it?

My wife just got one. I have a blackberry from work and I now envy hers

Whatever you get, my advice is get internet browser. It comes in so handy searching for stores, getting directions and maps, seeing what restaurants are available, etc.

I'd go for a HTC Touch Pro too. Functionality-wise, Windows Mobile runs circles around the iPhone.

I have the Storm as well... not nearly as user friendly as an IPhone,,, but about as close as you can get with Verizon. The click screen takes some getting used to, and BB has been very public about the fact that they released the phone earlier than they wanted to, and as such will have many patches. The nice thing about BB is that it has, by far, the easiest set up to get your work/personal emails.

It is compact think like the old nokias. Its about the size of a standard deck of cards. I really hate flip phones. It flips open to a really nice full screen and Qwerty Keyboard. You can get basic mobile internet on it, and email to your phone. It has a great sound system on it and my ring tone is actually a symphonic piece of music.

I have the "dare" or whatever. Great phone. I have no need for another phone, but my current one is on it's last legs, so with the free upgrade option I have in my plan I am considering either the Blackberry Storm or Samsung superphonethingy (name?).

Consumer Reports did their thing and came up with the LG Dare as the best phone through Verizon.

The best smartphone in the test was the Samsung BlackjackII (Windows Mobile) with an overall score of 69, Four points better than the Dare.

The Blackberry Storm (Verizon) came in at #4 in the smartphone sweepstakes with the same score as the Dare, 65.

Rumor has it that Verizon may get the iPhone too... but I'm doubtful because the iPhone is a GSM device, and even though Verizon is moving to GSM, it won't be for a couple years at the earliest.

Get the red phone. Red is faster.

I thought white was faster? Or is that just until it gets dirty?

as long as you apply a good layer of lube to the phone, they all work just as fast. Just like waxing your modem. :D
