Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - attn: The Fixer

Hey fixer,

would you say your guy at the eagle rock bike shop is pretty knowledgable about fixed gears? I've got something very wrong with my drive train and I'd like someone to take a look at it. I can't think of any other LBS around me that are fixed friendly. DId you say his name was Oscar?

Although he doesn't ride fixed, he is quite knowledgable. Before becoming owner of Budget, he was a bike mechanic for a number of years. Since I do all my own work, I basically patronize them for almost all parts I need. They are able to get almost anything for a fixie project, usually within 48 hours. What exactly is wrong with your drivetrain?

Well, the chain is still making that noise, even after cleaning and re-oiling it...and now the cranks are making a hellacious noise...not just the creaking and cracking that people on here have complained about, but really weird noises I've never heard. the BB was recently installed..it's a campy, and it's in great shape....but I'd like to have someone look at it...maybe that's where the problem is, I dunno. there's also seems to be too much "play" in the cranks...like there's a slight gap before you're actually rotating the rear wheel if that makes any sense.

I'm not a good mechanic at all...I'd love to learn how to work on bbs and head sets, though.

Have you tried isolating the problem by removing the chain and examining your cranks & BB? If there is play and your BB is not of the cartridge type, chances are your BB cups are simply loose or not adjusted correctly, assuming your cranks are torqued onto the spindle correctly. Your BB bearings can be dry as well. Any LBS should be able to pinpoint your problem in no time.

I took my chain off, and that's part of it, but there are like 3 different noises going on in different parts of the drive train...personally, I think something is screwed up with the BB...the guy who set up the bike kept talking about what a ***** it was to re-space it to fit... If you say that Oscar guy is good though, I'll take it to him. I used to take my surly 1x1 to them when it was a SS years ago and they were always nice guys.
