"If it looks like a bear, runs like a bear and growls like a bear.... Then it must be a ........ "
You know, when you're riding real fast, and it's dark out, and an growling 4 legged animal gives chase, it could be a bear.
Officer, I thought it was a bear.

I have a similar one that holds my canister of pepper spray on the top tube of both my bikes. On the bike with the cables on the top of the top tube I mount the canister under the tube. The other bike has the cables routed through the top tube so the canister can ride on the top of the top tube.
I purchase my canisters of pepper spray at a nearby police supply store. 3 ounce units that throw a stream rather than a mist. Canisters being produced by Defense Technology Federal Laboratories.
I have used pepper spray once on the bike when a teenage thug grabbed my handlebars and ordered me off the bike. A one second shot at close range settled that issue. These canisters I carry are the same ones used by the local police.
But by all means check your state laws. Some states do not allow private citizens to carry pepper sprays above a certain strength.
Usually just unclipping the canister from the frame acts as a deterrent against an unarmed human aggressor. While my wife and I ride a lot of rail trails that are away from civilization we have never had an encounter with wild animals there have been several on trails running through seedy sections of certain cities where the pepper spray came in handy.
