Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - "Postmaster" Seat Post Lock

Has anyone seen one of these lately? I've had one for 10 years on my Cannondale...ever since the last seat & post were stolen. Nobody I've talked to seems to understand what I'm talking about. This was a simple $6 device, a small braided cable with a hook type thing on one end and I think a loop or something on the other. You pushed the hook thing into the top of the seat post with a screwdriver (it won't slide back out no matter what) and dropped the other end into frame tube with the bottle cage screws backed out. You tighten up the cage screws and this locks the cable from pulling back out. Now you've got complete seat adjustment up and down but can't pull the post all the way out without removing the screw(s). It was called the Postmaster and was made by Innovations in Cycling. They are now called Genuine Innovations but even THEY don't know what I'm talking about. I want to lock my new bike's seat post the same way but can't find a GOOD way to do it. Bike Nashbar, where I bought the original Postmaster 10 years ago told me take the post out and carry it with me! Great solution...

Not really. The "Postmaster" was entirely inside the tube....nothing visible. That lock looks easy to cut. I hope there's something better out there. The only way to defeat the Postmaster was to remove the bottle cage screw. Thanks for that though...I may end up with it after all.

I say make it yourself.

Something like that should be easy and inexpensive to fabricate at Home Depot. Staff there ought to be able to cut you the appropriate length of cable and crimp on some ferrules to create your loop ends.

If your bike is a Cannondale, it's aluminium ?

Just TIG weld the seatpost in.

if you don't need to adjsut yopur seat height just put a normal seat bolt through chuck the qr on the seat post.

I take it there was something like a star nut that went into the seatpost? Sounds like a good idea. We bought a seat lock for my daughter's bike, but it's the sort of thing that keeps honest people honest, a thief would just laugh.

A star nut might be the best idea. Instead of holding together a fork steerer tube & stem, you'd put it inside the seatpost and find a way to attach a cable to it. Then, put something else at the end of the cable to dangle below one of the bottle cage bolts.

Why not just use a shear bolt ?

Um, there really isn't a rash of locked seatposts being stolen. A thief would just move on to the next bike that has a post which isn't locked.

That's right. Innovations in Cycling is now called Genuine Innovations. Same address and phone as the article states. They said the item hasn't been produced in 15 years...I got an email from them TODAY! This is a nifty device and I AM gonna make one. I thought I'd use braided fishing leader and crimps to form the eyes. A springy type piece of steel (like a small corner brace) will work in the top of the seat post and a plastic knob with a hole drilled in it for the cable to pass through (or something like that) will work for the lower part with a longer bottle cage screw to capture it. Invisible and impossible to cut. Worth a patent?
