Winter Cycling - Coldest temps you've ridden in

I'll start as I just posted this in another thread.

My personal record is -46C with the wind chill making it feel like -55C.
That would be about -67 Fahrenheit for you U.S folks.
We were ice fishing on Tobin Lake and had an old Trek 830 Antelope as our "ice bike".

And no, this wasn't a 40km ride. It was from our shack on the ice to the truck and back which was about 1km. But we did this many times during the day to get our food and "antifreeze" and to start and shut off the truck.
I was wearing my Canada Goose parka and pants with Sorel Glacier boots. And only those that have pedaled in Sorel's know how funny it looks!

I am humbled. My best has been -20F this past Thursday (January 15, 2009).

Mine is - 25 C with a windchill of -30 or so with no sun and a bit of snow falling.

-18 f with -32 wind chill. I ready to move back to Arizona!!

Wow That's sure got me beat. Mine was -27ºC and I thought that was pretty darn cold!

When I commuted to work by bicycle regularly back in Winnipeg, the coldest temp I rode in was -40C/F. I'm not sure what the windchill factor was. My commute was only 13.4 km round trip (so about 30 minutes each way in the winter), and as long as the roads were in decent shape, I rode.

I've walked in even colder temps both in Winnipeg and when I lived in northern Alberta.

Only 13.4 km at -40ºF. Now that's funny!

I did +22F this past Friday. What can I say? I'm in Texas.

i was gonna ride the other day when it was close to -30 with the wind.

i *****ed out a couple times when it was colder out. and that was mostly due to the nagging of my peers who thought i was gonna die doing so. otherwise i would have done it.

Last year was 3f. This year so far -14f. -67f or 22f. So what, as long as your out there doin' it. It takes a hearty soul to ride in cold weather no matter what the temps are.

So what do you define as cold weather, and how cold does it have to be to need a hearty soul? Does 24 degrees count.

no 24 degress doesn't count. that is cold and you do need to dress warm, but that is tropical compared
to 14 degrees. or 5.

My record is -36C without windchill. Temperature isn't really a factor in winter biking- at least that's my personal opinion. I think the only hard part is going through that brown sand/salt mix!

We have been having some awsome weather here in Saskatchewan. Its been about -10 to -15 for the last 5 days.
But it is supposed to dip down to -33 tonight. I have been out more in the last week than in 2 months.

If you're talking the Fahrenheit (is that how it's spelled?) system it's got to have a "-" in front of the number for it to count as cold.

-17.8C is about when it starts getting cold.

It was cold this morning at -18C ... it wasn't cold yesterday morning at -6C.

The coldest weather I've ridden in was -20F/-29 C. I've gone skiing at -30F/-34 C. Both are perfectly comfortable with the right clothing - in fact, I've skiied with my then 8 year old daughter at these temperatures and she had a ball.

I agree with Matchka that below 0 F/-18 C is where cold really begins. The air feels really dry when you inhale and snow and ice become much less slippery.

It's like asking how cold is the lobby in hell? You reach a point where it doesn't much matter. I hit that point last week.

For your reference, Hell is kept at a constant -273.16K/-460F, to be as punishing as possible. The temperature is raised slightly in the whipping room, so the demons can move their whips. Okay, not that funny but couldn't help it.
By the way, I cycled two miles from the library to home last night at 2.6C in shorts. Can someone please tell me off. I can't wait for the juicy comments.:ride::ride:

2 miles is nothing. You could have ridden in shorts and a sleeveless jersey for 2 miles in -26C and been OK. For 2 miles, I wouldn't have even bothered to get the bicycle out ... I'd have walked and gotten some fresh air and exercise from it.

Shame about that. I was hoping to be told off thoroughly for that, but I wanted to get in/ out quickly, though I did go night hiking (3mph) in 41-45F (5-7C) for several hours in shorts, a hoodie and glovea and was comfortable. When I cycled home from the end of the walk, the temperature was rising due to cloud cover and I had to substitue for a thin wool sweater inside. Picture a stripy wool sweater with cargo shorts, hiking boots and gloves.
Anyway, sorry I've distracted from the thread. I just feel left out because I get to cycle in less than 25-30 once in a blue moon. Having read about some of the temperatures you'd get has wetted my appetite and made we want to go cycling in extreme cold and holiday. Obviously, I wouldn't wear shorts in -10 degree weather. I'm not that bad.
