Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. What's involved in converting to a triple ring from a double ring road bike?

With Shimano (except DA?): new cranks, BB, f.and r. derailleur. Also a couple chain links and new cables. This assumes your left shifter is triple capable. If not, add a left shifter.
Also consider a compact 34/50 crankset from FSA. All that is needed is a $150-$250 compact crank. Fifteen minute installation, and easy to switch back to a 39/53.

How picky are you?
The first poster gave the "book" answer except for the chain link part. Since your big/big gear combination isn't going to get any bigger, you can use your present chain as it is. While I would recommend a new triple front derailleur, most riders can get along with a short cage rear derailleur. You generally only use the 30 tooth granny ring with the largest 2 or 3 cogs so you can live without enough chain wrap capacity to cover the 30/12 combination..
