I have to bleed the Coda Expert disc brakes on a Cannondale. I downloaded the manual and it said the brake fluid is 'developed by NASA'  and of course is not compatible with anything else. So I went to the local Cannondale dealer who told me that they don't make the fluid anymore as they don't make the brakes anymore. (sigh) They then told me to use the Singer sewing machine oil ??? Does this sound right to you guys? Evidently I need a mineral fluid but the Shimano fliud is too thick. DOT fluid will corrode the internals. Thanks in advance.

The curse of proprietary parts. You'd think they'd want to support the people who bought their products better than that.

Magura uses mineral oil brake fluid, but I don't know about the viscosity. The reference material that I have says that using the wrong brake fluid will ruin your brake system. Before I tried the sewing machine oil, I'd be looking for some some kind of monitary reassurance from the guy who recommended it.

I used to manufacture and make race systems for Karts, and if conventional brake fluid was not used, then we used Automatic Transmission Fluid. This is generraly red in colour, and feels like a normal mineral to touch, wheras Brake Fluid has its own particular feel to it, and taste if you want to go that far. ATF is a very low viscosity oil, and although I will not guarranty it, I would think that this is the oil that is used

What about silicon based brake fluid? It is non-corrosive.

thanks for the suggestions guys. I also had someone say they used Motul 2.5wt fork oil in their XT discs. I ended up using the Shimano stuff (as we had some) and it worked OK.
