I have mentioned before that I did not think too highly of the xtracycle concept, because the cargo space it provides is odd-shaped. The Bakfiets bikes make a lot more sense to me, because they have one large cargo area that is centrally-located, rather than two smaller cargo areas that are set on each side. I haven't ever owned an xtracycle however, so my opinion is worth about that much.

Here's some photos I found to be rather interesting.
The motorcycles are converted with long tails, but the cargo shelf is wider than the motorcycle, and is placed high over the rear wheel.

These guys no doubt could have built "saddlebag-style" side cargo shelves (like the Xtracycle setups) but obviously they found little use for them.

Actually, they probably didn't think of the xtra saddlebag style because of their needs. It would be easy to put a big flat area on top of the xtra set up when you need it. It would of course be fishtail like with all that weight past the rear axle- at least on a bicycle. All the weight of a motorcycle may change that, I wouldn't know. No one did an xtra long bike until Xtracycle did but now a number of companies are making their own versions, so to say because the motorcycle builders chose not to (or didn't think of it) doesn't mean it wouldn't be handy on a motorcycle. I don't ride a motorcycle but a couple of motorcyclists here in town were admiring my xtra and wishing they had that on their motorcycle.
The extra is still not the do-all bike. I want a low long bike setup in front for my short-legged dog with an xtra on the rear for my gear. Most of the time in town my dog runs with me at about 6 mph but sometimes it would be nice to go fast for a while.
