Mountain Biking - Bike rack for a truck

Found a truck rack built from PVC on Utah Mountain Biking's site. Bought my son a Chevy s10 and want to do some trails with him. Don't want to spend a lot on this project as I am primarily a roadie, unless he gets into it. Anybody tried this:

never tried that cause i don't have a turck but it looks like all it does is keep the bikes standing up, so i'd be sure you at least have some kinda line going through the bikes to the truck just in case, shouldn't bounce outta a truck bet but if it did it would just suck so much

that pvc does not look sturdy at all. I definatly wouldn't trust my bikes hooked into one of those. The second option seems like a much better way for about the same price

I've made that rack with those instructions, worked out really well. But it was more expensive than the guy made it out to be. Those elbows and tees were pricey.

You don't have to build anything, just hang the front wheel over the tailgate. Put something on the tailgate to protect the truck/bikes and run a bungee or some sort of strap over the top of the bikes if you want extra security.

That rack looks decent, but why the spec for PVC? Is 1 1/2" ABS no longer available? Stiffer, stronger, way cheaper, and it's already bad black.

Don't need to get fancy with a whole pickup bed to work with. Racks are for cars.

i tie two in my truck just like i tie down two motorcycles, just less tension in the straps

three would fit if i flipped the ceter one and strapped it to the tailgate

lot easier then building a rack.

I had a piece of 2x4 (or maybe 2x6) with a couple fork mounts bolted to it. Toss that in the bed, lock in the bikes and toss in the front wheels - you're good to go.

2nd the lumber! I have a 4 x 4 mounted on 2 short 4 x 4s on the end cut to fit between the wheelwell and the cab to keep from sliding around, made 2 more short blocks , screwed these to the 4 by and mounted fork mounts to them.
Works perfect, heavy enough to keep bikes anchored and don't worry about it being stolen.

They sell similar versions of these on bikeperformance.com or whatever the site was for 10 bucks, they work great.

Yeah the fork mounts are the way to go, you can get them for like 15 bucks at your LBS

Tailgates and old blankets are free; and these are cheaper than cheap fork mounts, plus no need to take off the front tire
