Brand new (supposedly) CycleOps Fluid2 Trainer. Brand new 2008 Specialized Sequoia. I put the bike on the trainer expecting a somewhat quiet experience and I hear this very irritating noise coming from the trainer.

I first suspect something is wrong with the trainer. Then I notice that the tire has a pattern to it. Could it be that the tire pattern is causing all of the noise?

Also, I am newbie to trainers. How tight is to tight for the roller being up against the tire?

Thanks

I get a slight hum from the same trainer, definitely not irritating. Sounds like a little tire whhiiiiir and spoke whiiiiir together. Completely inaudible with headphones at moderate volume. I imagine tire pattern would cause some noise, but don't think it would be loud unless your running knobbies on your Sequoia.
I tighten my roller down just until it doesn't slip any at a fairly hard acceleration from a dead stop.

Might look into a Continental Trainer Tire, removes that hum, saves your tires and drum from getting all black from melting your tire over time. As far as how tight to fit against the tire, it should make good contact, but not spin out when you really force the cranks down.

I just recently obtained the same trainer... My tires, serfas seca, have virtually no tread at the contact patch, and it produces barely any sound, however, my girlfriend's tires, kenda kwest, with tread, produce quite a bit more noise then mine. I say take "jaxgtr"'s advice or even find an inexpensive "slick" tire for trainer purposes.
