Bad drivers, mountain lions, coyotes and now cows... What will Boulder do to make open space safe for people? :bike:

Can someone make a smilie avatar of a cow running over a cyclist?

BOULDER, Colo. — A cow charged a woman on the South Boulder Creek Trail on Monday afternoon, knocking her down, officials said.

The woman was riding her bike on the trail when she encountered the cow, and she stopped to let the animal pass, said Pete Taylor, a ranger for Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks. The cow knocked the woman over and walked on her legs, he said.

He said the woman -- whose name wasn't released -- wasn’t seriously injured, and she refused medical treatment.

She didn’t appear to do anything to provoke the animal, which witnesses said appeared to have an injured leg, he said. The cow had left the scene by the time rangers arrived, but hikers coming down the trail were warning others about the rogue bovine.

Marshall Mesa open space is leased by livestock owners and used as grazing land. Taylor said the cow’s owner was notified.

Jason Vogel, vice president of the Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance, called the attack "odd, rare and random" and said he hasn’t heard of any other cows going after cyclists. It’s not even common to come across cows on the trails, he said, though they often can be seen nearby.

"It’s not something people should be concerned about," he said.

About the same as your average bear.

No, it was texting on its Blackberry. Elitist.

I rode on cattle-infested roads & trails in NE NM and SE CO for years...the only way to get run over by cattle is if the feed truck is in view and you're in the way!

Exactly. Perhaps the cyclist teased the cow with a Clif bar or some GU shots.

We had bovine animals when I was a kid. Cattle really are not aggressive. I have always been able to shoo them away when I have needed to. Of course, as mentioned above, you do not want to get between one and its perceived dinner.

Actually bears are pretty fast. About 30 MPH. But they are only good for about a quarter mile.

I guess cows aren't that much slower.

This is why I always give angry bears a quarter mile of space.

I was on a motorcycle ride this past summer, we were off on forest service roads through range land. We encountered lots of "forest cows." Trust me, they were more aggressive than your typical barn-cow. We had a narrow escape from a HUGE cow w/baby cow at one point. She was not going to back down...lowered her head and started coming towards us. We were lucky to have an engine at that point...

The other day on a ride, I was speeding down a narrow, twisting, mountain road. Then along comes a woman who was driving very slowly uphill toward me, honking her horn and shouting at me.

"PIG! PIG!!" she yelled. "PIG! PIG!!"

So I flipped her the finger and shouted back some things I dare not repeat as I buzzed by her.

Still thinking about this awful woman and her shouting, I turned the corner and promptly collided with a pig.

So, the only issue I can see is that cows can't read the no cow signs. ;)

I would hate to hit the byproducts that most bovines seem to leave...messy at speed, so I think they need to ban cows, post signs and enforce it!:innocent: BTW we have that issue on our MUP but with people illegally riding horses on it...I guess the horses are illiterate too...:p

P.S.: Best of luck on the road to recovery, Tom. You'll find that the 2 months will pass by rather quickly ( especially if you spend your spare time on eBay looking for new bike goodies ;) )

No, just their thoughtless riders. A vehicle (including a beast of burden charged with human control) is only made dangerous by the person in control of it.

I wonder if the cow became loose from the herd?:(

On the humorous side, I wonder if the cow was, 'having a cow'.:roflmao2:

Maybe it was a cow-impersonating poseur who didn't realize he/she/it had strayed from the designated Cow Lane.

Interesting. How much more aggressive?

Are we talking something like +50% attack bonus, +10% defense, compared to "field cows?"

Well, let's see. Hypothetically speaking, based upon MY past farm experiences, walking through a field of barn cows would not concern me in the least. Based upon my trip through the forests of eastern Oregon, and my direct experiences running into lots and lots of cows milling through the forest and on the road, and nearly being charged by one of them, I'd say that cow was more like 80% defense (of baby cow) and 20% just aggressive. And huge.
