What is the first U.S. Presidential election you were eligible to vote in?

If you are from outside U.S., then the first Prime Minister or other similar election you were eligible to vote in.

For me..... Bush (senior) v. Dukakis

+1 I remember my third grade teacher asking the class who we thought our folks were voting for. Me and another kid were the only ones who raised their hands for McGovern

First eligible Presidential election was:

"2004: Bush vs Kerry" - did not vote

then:

"2008: McCain vs Obama" - did not vote

edit: scratch that, I was only 17 in 2004, so the 2008 election was the first election I could've voted in...but didn't.

+1.

That was also a major learning experience for me as it was the first time I became aware of other people my age in my area who were polar opposites to my perspective politically. Naive, I know, but I needed to grow up (I was 19)

A more interesting question was what was the first election where you voted for the winning side.

Me: never.

I most definitely didn't vote for the winning Conservative side in my student days, and by the time that party got booted out I was living abroad and somehow managed to lose my vote.

I was of age to vote in 1984 (I made voting age in 1981) for Reagan vs Mondale. However I didn't register to vote until 1988 for Bush Sr. vs Dukakis. I registered in hopes of that 2 term limit being repealed.

After that it was a long time between presidential winners, though I had a few local ones.

Same here. My father had for some reason become a 'Young Republican', and I remember going to some rallies for Goldwater.

Mind you, I was not old enough to vote! Also, my father soon became disillusioned with the Republicans, and I don't think he ever voted for another Republican.

The first election for which I was eligible to vote was Nixon vs. McGovern.

Actually able to vote was in 1976, Carter/Ford. I remember Ford constantly flubbing his answers on one of the debates. That probably did him in.

First election I can remember was the 1968 election (Nixon/Humphrey). I remember it due to the constant TV coverage of what went on that year: Chicago Democratic Convention riots, RFK & MLK assasinations; what a year.

Anderson v. Carter v. Reagan

Geezer.

I also remember back to 1964 (my parents were, and mom still is very politically aware). I remember back in 1972, when Chuckie Stevens got a free "President Nixon" bumper sticker from a surprised Republican, and customized it to read "I resent Nixon".

First election I remember being aware of was the 1988 US Presidential election.

First Canadian federal election I was aware of was the 1988 election (late November): Brian Mulroney (Progressive Conservative), John Turner (Liberal), Ed Broadbent (NDP) I liked Ed Broadbent because I had a friend called Edward.

First election I voted in was the 2000 Canadian federal election:
Jean Chrétien (Liberal), Stockwell Day (Canadian Alliance), Gilles Duceppe (Bloc Québécois), Alexa McDonough (NDP), Joe Clark (Progressive Conservative)

But I've never voted for a Prime Minister :p

Carter was my first voting election.

However <cough> I was a member of the Young Republicans throughout Junior and Senior High (ok so I had a crush on my best friend's older brother - who was also in the Young Republicans - hehe - had a crush on another friend's brother who was in the marching band - so guess what, I was in the marching band too :D) so I was quite involved in the Nixon then Ford years ... think I still have some Nixon/Agnew buttons ...
