Texas - Slow riding partner in Houston

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My dad needs a riding partner for 15-30 mile rides averaging between 10-15 mph. He's a good sport and has lots of stories. He either rides a recumbent or a mountain bike.
Are there any other slow people near downtown that would want to ride with him?

Yep, Houston is a Large Area.
You could come down once for a ride.
We would treat you very nice.
We do have some riders come down from Katy and Houston.

Maybe I could meet some of the riders from Katy up here. I usually ride to the Fulshear area.

The New Causeway to Galveston is now open with a shoulder.
We plan to ride there once a week when the temps warm up just a tad.
That would be a fun trip for you to join us on.

12mph on road bikes? you guys must be having a blast shooting the breeze.
although that speed sounds right for my urban MTB rides.
Awesome to see your dad is still keeping 2 wheels on the ground! I'll ask around for any chill recreational cyclist rides!!! I live downtown.

Check out Houston Bicycle Club (houstonbicycleclub.org). You can ride with them for free occasionally or join for $25/year. Here is a description of one of their weekend downtown area rides (20 miles):
This is an informal, leader led ride, at a leisurely pace ( Ride speed: 11 to 14 mph ) for those who want to know Houston and many of its special places, by bike. Learn basic bicycle commuting safety with a friendly group. Rest stop will include one of the city's independent coffee houses. This ride is normally scheduled the first Sunday of each month and the route will vary at the whim of the leader, but will generally include a "figure 8 pattern" so that riders who do not wish to do the entire ride can easily return to the ride start.
Meet: Parking lot of Stude Park on Usener St. near Michaux St. The nearest large cross streets are White Oak and Studemont.

Actually, I thought that the Causeway is the thing to the east of 45...On 45 there is a sign stating that bicycles are prohibited from crossing on the 45 bridge.

That is the only way to get there by bike.
Is this a New Sign? Where, what side is it on?
North /South?
Thanks

The sign is mentioned in an older BF thread about traveling to Galveston by bike. North side.
Also, here's a link from someone that did Bike Around The Bay
Bicycles are not allowed on the causeway linking the mainland and Galveston Island. According to TXDOT, today was to be the very first time that bicycles were permitted.

Okay, I was hoping that the policy had changed with the new bridge opening, so I e-mailed the Galveston County Sheriff's Office to see if riding across is now allowed.
Kyle,
I contacted the Galveston Police Department who is responsible for causeway and they informed me that you cannot ride a bike across the causeway. Sorry…I know they often close a lane for bike races.

Bull! Someone has an exceedingly short memory. :notamused: Back in 1989 the Houston Comical put on the City to the Shore Bicycle Tour and guess what?? They took us over the causeway. Of course, they also had cyclists strung out all the way down 45 which did not amuse DPS very much and the Comical was asked/ordered never to put on another City to the Shore. :(

Are you sure that Mr. Dave just didn't refuse to see it?
If it ever did exist, I'm sure hurricane Ike ate it. These days, Galveston is hurting so badly, I think they will take tourists coming by any means of transportation.

I remember a sign a few years ago, I crossed over that bridge quite often prior to Hurricane Ike when I would go to UTMB. The sign I saw existed when the old bridge was being used.
