I searched for remedies to excessively short steerer tubes on forks. They include (1) buying a stem with a shorter stack heigh - most are 40mm tall and (2) buying a headset with a shorter stack height - they range from Cranks Bros on the low end at 21mm to cheaper models that can be over 35mm. I found this stem new old stock at a price cheaper than a new headset.
I found that this (out of production) mountain bike stem has one of the shortest stack heights out there at 34mm. I was 5mm short so this is perfect.
The installation is interesting: The collett fits over the fork and the headset is preloaded with the 5mm bolt. Then the stem slides over the collet and the 3 bolts are tightened into the collet. Think drill bit tightening. I haven't ridden it yet but it's reputed to be ultra-stiff due to the design. SAAGO=stiff as all get out. Name is super-lame though. Let's keep it abridged.
