I met someone who said that they never use a mousepad with their Logitech MX 600 Cordless Laser mouse.
Wow, is that possible?
He said that he has a desk that he keeps clean and polished and so, I guess, that's how he gets by without using a mouse?
Hey I've always used a mouse, ALWAYS. Is it really possible to forego the use of a mouse? I have to wonder if it would cause the mouse to wear out sooner or cause any other problem.
Depends on desk surface. I've noticed harder surfaces wear out the Teflon pads on a mouse a lot quicker than when a mousepad is used.
I don't use mousepads... never had. If the surface is not working, I might tape a paper, but that's it.
I use a plain grey cloth mousepad I got at Fry's for $3 or so a few years ago. Before that, I didn't use one for years. I've had the same mouse for 8-10 years, and have used it so much that the little feet are completely worn off, and the bottom of the mouse is polished to a high sheen. :)

'pends on the mouse and the surface. At work I have a mouse pad with a gel wrist rest (I was told I HAD to use it:rolleyes:) The current microcrap mini mouse I have does pretty good on every thing but glass. One hotel I was staying at had plate glass on the desktops and it didn't like it, I just plopped a magazine or letter down on the desk and used that. More apt to run the mouse without a pad than with. Home desktop has a mouse pad, but my wife put it there because it matches the decor:lol:

Fake laminate desktop, dirty or not: Yep. Kitchen table, possible smears: Uh huh. Optical mice can handle just about any surface. Mousepads are SO 1990's. :)

I started using one after I noticed the veneer finish was wearing underneath my mouse. It's an ordinary LED optical. Works equally well with or without.

Optical mouse, generic brand. No mousepad; I just use the surface of my bed.
Logitech MX518. Commando.
stupid MX510 and MX518, emits a high pitched whine.
if for some reason these MX mice break, I'm getting a laser cordless with charge station.

At work I have never used a mousepad. One desk at home requires a mousepad but the other desk doesn't. With the laptop mouse, I just use my pantleg or the arm of the couch.
I can't stand mousepads, but at least I was able to trim my mousepad at home to fit in my desk tray so it sits flush and doesn't move at all. In fact, I forget that I even have one at home. I was going to say I haven't used a mousepad in many years, then I remembered that I use a green one at home every day. :(
been using one of these for years. Helps the wrist:

Home computer has a Logitech Trackball so no pad required..
Work has an optical mouse that doesn't need a pad, however I use wrist gel pad/mouse pad combo - used to get some shooting pains in the wrist as my wrist tended to rest on the desk edge and that's not good.

You don't really 'need' a mouse pad unless you still use an old-fashioned ball mouse. Do they even still make those?
They are pointless for laser and IR type mouses.
At home I have an IR mouse and haven't used one in about 3-4 years. At work I've had an IR mouse for about 1 1/2 years and haven't used one on it.
I personally think that it's the mouse's choice whether to use pads or any other type of protection.

i got that too, but i actually turn it sideways so that i don't use the wrist pad anymore. i find it actually hurts my wrist more.
put your ear right next to a MX510 or MX518, you'll hear it.
I'd have to say it's the same sort of noise an electronic mosquito repellent makes.

I use one - more for my wrist than the mouse though. That and the pad helps keep the mouse area clear of clutter. I really need to clean my desk off.

I'm using that as well. Works great.
No mouse pads for me at home or work. I keep carpal tunnel at bay by mousing right handed at work and left handed at home.

That is the one work issued us to use...something about OSHA and Ergonomic injuries...:crash: of course I am the only one at work that doesn't use a full sized keyboard, mouse and monitor. I just plop my laptop on the docking station and have at it.
Aaron:)
Been a laptop user since the late 90's and use the touchpad, hate to sit down someplace and have to use a mouse, so much more work having to lift my hand up move over and reach for the mouse, if I wanted exercise I'd go ride my bike.

Update:
It's now been close to 90 days living without a mousepad for the first time ever in my life.
The experiment is over.
Ranking the level of satisfaction I derive from not having a mousepad - on a scale of 1 to 10 - is an easy 11.
I have a wireless keyboard and mouse. My table is devoid of ancillary junk items, items like paper or whatever else you could imagine. All I have on my table are 5 essential items:
1) keyboard
2) mouse
3) router
4) modem
5) speakers
There are zero restrictions or encumberments when manipulating my mouse sans mousepad. There is zero friction, no reluctance or hesitation during the manipulation process. The manueverability factor is very user friendly.
In retrospect, having a mousepad on my tabletop - the look of said mousepad on my tabletop - was like having a bedspread with Bugs Bunny and Woody the Woodpecker portrayed on it. It's not that bad. But something like that is geared more for children. For an adult, I now deem the mousepad a tad dorky, borderline tacky. My computer table, minus mousepad, now looks cleaner, sleeker, more streamlined like a jet airplane.
Not having a mousepad gives me more freedom.
I no longer have to waste time going to the store to buy a new one every 6-8 months. Nor do I have to waste time ordering one online. Freedom is my religion. I like not wasting time. I like having more time to practice my religion the way I want to practice freedom as opposed to having it dictated to me by circumstance. I once met a hot woman while shopping for a mousepad. There are other ways to meet women.
I'll never go back to using a mousepad. To do so would be ridiculous. Life is too short to spend time in a state of ridicule. To do so would be a sin against my religion.
I use one at work because it has a gel rest for my wrist. At home I use a logitech trackball so no moving.

Ball mice still probably work better with a pad.
IR and laser mice (which are probably more common these days) don't really need a pad. I've been using IR mice for years and haven't used a pad in years either.

Mouse performance is not the only reason to use a mousepad.

Same here! Apparently my wrists are so curiously constructed that they cannot be comforted by ergo stuff. Typing on one of those MS natural shape keyboards is torture...
