For Irish Whiskey, I'm a huge fan of Redbreast. A wonderfully cherry/honey finish

And for bourbon --my mainstay these days-- The staple is Maker's Mark, but Woodford Reserve when I want that perfect sip, or Basil Hayden's for when I'm in the mood for something a little sweeter.

Love Woodford Reserve. Makers Mark is nice, but for a traditional, cheaper bourbon, I go with...

Actually, Maker's Mark is cheaper than Knob Creek here in PA, because it's often on special. They're both my favorites. As to Scotch, it's just about anything Highland, depending on my mood, but Laphroaig is just the ticket when it's cold, snowy, a fire's going in the fireplace, a dog at the feet, and a reading of a wee bit o' Bobbie Burns. Sheer heaven.

Once in a while my ex and I used to go for a crown royal, usually the reserve or the knob creek, but we mainly stayed with the many types of scotch.

I am a single malt scotch man. I do like Irish whiskey for the smoothness. A favorite of mine is a rare and expensive brand called The Classic Cask, Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey 15 r old.....I have a limited run bottle # 100 of 631..Try it

Maker's Mark FTW. I'm an ambassador, but it's a dirty little secret I don't like to share (except on public forums). God I can't wait to go down there to be the first to sample the barrel with my name on it. Anyone else?

I've been there too, but I've never actually tried their bourbon (I was only 18 at the time, and they still had a couple years worth of aging left on their first batch). Now that you've reminded me, and since my Maker's Mark bottle is empty, perhaps I'll make that next on my list to try.

Their stone warehouse is quite a nostalgic sight. If I remember right from the tour, Jack Daniels was one of the investors in restoring and opening the distillery, although I doubt they'd admit it now that the brand is established.

If someone was coming to a party, and asked regardless of cost what was your favorite bourbon or scotch, what would be the best answer? Wild Turkey rare breed?

I don't drink much, so I've never really tried any of the harder liquors. Last time I was in a BevMo, I decided to give something a shot (hurr hurr), and picked up a bottle of Crown Royal (with two free rocks glasses! :P). I know, classy, huh? In any case, it seems interesting enough that the genre might require some further study.

Bourbons are very nice. Do not drink them out of tumblers though. Bourbons and scotches are nosy, like wine. Drink them out of a stemless wine glass, snifter, etc.

Next thing I'll probably try is one of the moderately-priced (~$20-25 or so) single-malts from the other thread. I'll be sure to pick up a proper receptacle with it, if I can't find one around the house. :)

I really want to try that one.

An interesting one that my roommate told me about is Pendelton Canadian wiskey: http://www.hrdspirits.com/press_pendleton.cfm It's so smooth, it didn't taste like it had any alcohol in it. It was also almost as sweet as most rum's I've had, so it isn't really something I can't sit down and drink very much straight. Not the best, but definitely interesting to try.

A whiskey that proudly proclaims that its been "aged less than 30 days" will jack you up. Trust me on that one.
