I've always had issues with milk - seems to give me bad cramps if consumed within a couple of hours of riding. However, I found a new 'favorite' nasty pre-ride food yesterday:

Sushi.

I went out for lunch with my wife yesterday, and had a good feed of ngiri and maki, with plenty of gari (pickled ginger) and wasabi on the side (and plenty of water). It went down a treat... and felt very healthy to boot.

On the ride home?

Worst. Tasting. Burps. Ever.

It wasn't bad sushi, and I didn't actually have a stomach upset, but these things did not make for a pleasant ride.

What foods have you found to be bad to eat before riding?

My biggest mistake was stopping at a convienience store and getting a diet coke and a donut. HORRIBLE.

Buttered Microwave Popcorn!

Not only do you burp the taste for hours, but you're distracted while riding with the ca-ca stuck in your teeth and gums! :(

Hmmm, I'm eating Campbell's Hearty Bean 'n' Ham soup right now. I'll be heading home in 3-4 hours...wonder if that's going to be a problem!

Good thing I pull a trailer, that should keep 'em off my wheel.

humm.. don't ride for at least 1 full hour after you eat. it's not healthy to ur tummy. pre-ride food tends to be a light peanut butter jelly sandwich, banana, orange, or some kind of other fruit. then i ride 1 hr later.

One of my friends loaded on chicken wings and beer before a race. About 3mi into the race he got to see them all again, and so did about 5 of the riders behind him.

I love sushi. My gf and I usually have no problems biking home after a heafty meal. If you have a lot of ginger and wasabi, the mixture causes some kinda weird foamy burp that'll sting your throat.
BTW: are you lactose intolerant? could explain your stomach issues.

I made a shocking mistake on my first tour back in Feb 2000. Riding from Glen Innes to Grafton in NSW (just over 160km) into a headwind. I decide to stop and eat something on 120km or so at Jackadgery (first food stop after leaving Glen Innes). The idea to eat was good, but all I could get at this particular place was a greasy hamburger. I decided to mix it with one of those vile-tasting over priced sports drinks.

I had been doing pretty well up until that point, but as soon as I finished that lot and rode off, I knew something was wrong. I had literally no energy for the remaining however long it was (around 47km from memory). Had I just waited another 5km, I would have been able to go somewhere else, and possibly have had more choice.

Not lactose intolerant - no 'stomach issues' to speak of here. Many people I know and speak to have issues with consuming milk before extended exercise.

I think it's the ginger with the sushi... :D

Liverwurst!!

I made the mistake of eating a liverwurst sandwich just before a Time Trial. I was on the verge of throwing it up through the entire TT!!

Eggs, peppers, milk, ginger . . . all bad things too.

Two bottles of French wine and a pound of chicken pate. Thanks to some French farmers my wife and I only managed about 40 kilometers one day because our bikes had become French Delicacy Carriers, so at our ritual morning coffee stop we decided to lose some of that weight. We woke up a couple of hours later in the burning sun and were pretty much done for the day. Good pate and wine, though!

Taco Bell bean burritos.....

I ate those for a month once (I was broke....grande meals are hella cheap too)....

the machine gun farts were not worth it....i think i farted over 40 times in a 5 minute period....it was ridiculous, and the smell was the worst....needless to say many many matches were burned that day :(
