I need to replace a cheap Dicta freewheel, but don't want to spend $80 on a White Industries, what is the next best choice?

I never liked the old Shimano freewheels when I was BMXing, but that 25-30 years ago. Back then when I was racing I'd replace the chain and freewheel every month(thanks to M&D Racing), but I don't like to waste my money like that.

You don' have to spend $80 on a white, you can get genly used ones of eBay for <$50 and its WELL worth it. 2 crappy Shimano FW's = 1 nice used White which will last longer than 10 shimanos.

they all suck except white

acs claws will gank up and seize/skip like any of the others

One big thing I don't like about White's is they are loud as hell, they'll hear you come a block away. I prefer silence (incognito).

I have the 18t trials version and it is bomb proof but really heavy with a wide chainline. It is a thing of beauty though and extremely well made. It's like buying a Phil Bottom bracket, it will last a life time.

I wish I could make it silent !!!!

I wish I could make it silent !!!!long ago, Phil Wood used to make a little doohickey that allowed you to easily grease your freewheel without tearing it apart. The silence would only last about 100 miles. I used the one at my shop every friday night.

The Trials version has more prawls I thought, so yours may be louder than my std White ENO FW.

I also run a Chris King single speed hub. You want loud? The CK hub puts a White ENO FW to shame. The CK is like a damn pack of angry bee's.

Shimano because of the silence. A quiet drive train is part of the appeal of single speeding for me. May not last as long as a White or King but they are inexpensive enough to be replaced.

I have both the trials version (green) and the standard (red). Although the trials version has double the number of clicks (72 vs 36) it is no louder than the standard. The trials version sounds almost as good as a CK hub....but not quite. CK's have a more refined sound to them.

Good info, Can you get a photo of it? I may ned to resource one I. I rarely use the Eno Trials because I find it annoyingly loud.

I may go back to to a silent Shimano, as written above I too prefer the silence and there dirt cheap to replace.

Cheers

Yes, I know it is a Stein. Read his post again.

Long before White Industries made freewheels.

OK, I'll bite. I did read it again but I guess I'm just a little slow. Are you saying that the Phil Wood doohickey he mentioned is actually a Stein?

It could be, but Phil has made a lot of stuff since 1971, so I could be wrong.

I've had those pedals but we're digressing. I would just like to find a way to make my WI freewheel quiet.

i have the Eno 18T trials freewheel and it is no louder than a Dicta or a Shimano (both of which I've used before.)

got mine for $50 on Ebay - one of the highest quality components i've ever seen. you can read more about it on my blog: http://djcatnap.com/?p=73

That plastic gizmo came on a derailleur hanger of a frame I purchased long ago. I don't know exactly what the purpose it had. But it works well as a chain hanger while removing and re-installing the wheel.
