Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Hockey-stick grip tape...

Ok, got a question/problem, I recently build up my second bike and finished it with a rattlecan paintjob covered in a spray-on acrylic top-coat. And my problem is, IT'S ALLREADY CHIPPING!! So what I want to know is, is it acceptable to wrap the frame in hockey grip tape to protect it?? Or will that make it into a nasty, ugly mess???

i'm confused. you want to wrap hockey tape over your paint to protect it? you will just be covering your paint up with hockey tape. then when you go to take the tape off you will peel the paint and when you try to get the adhesive off with a citrus based cleaner you will probably take off more paint. sounds like you bought cheap paint, or it was to cold when you sprayed it on, get a can or two or Crylon, and clear coat it, it shouldn't chip to bad.

i don't recommend tape or stickers or anything over chipping paint. it will hold any moisture right against the bare steel which will likely cause rust spots. if you want to prevent rusting or chipping, get your frame painted right.

I'm more interested in protecting the frame then the paint.

clear coat it. or get it powder coated.

I always wondered what it would be like to buy that Rhino liner stuff that you're supposed to line the inside of a truck bed with and do up a frame with that.

I think so long as you didn't add the gritty stuff that makes it like sandpaper, you'd be okay. Unless you don't think you'd miss the skin on the inside of your knees.

Or get some long pieces of vinyl from a sign shop and wrap the frame that way. I know I get scraps for free from my friend's shop but he gives them away to anyone.

there is spray can stuff like that Rhino liner, but it sucks. it peels off in strips. the real stuff rhino liner stuff is pretty tuff, but it is heavy and it would make your frame pretty course. i don't think it would work well on a bike.

if your paint is that poorly adhered and soft, its probably going to get ripped off with any tape as tacky as hockey tape

just take it bikes get chipped, its ok

Nothing like a good rubber coating on your bike. Actually, if you masked off places that need it, that would be pretty rad. Might make it about a half pound heavier though.
