We've been trying to find a tandem to buy (never thought it would be so hard), but all we see are road bikes with the classic *low* handle bar. Does anyone have any ideas about using other "hybrid type" handlebars on a tandem? What works? I'm sure someone, somewhere has done this. Currently we right upright on singles, but are willing to move to a more "mountian bike" position.

You can get "bullhorn" style" handlebars. The flat part of the bar, that extends out from the stem, is the same height as a drop bar, but the ends curve up. My stoker(s) prefer a more upright position, so I configured my bike as such. (See attached picture.) You can also tilt the bar tips up a little bit to further increase the upright position. There are other pictures on the "Pictures of happy tandem couples" that might help you. Hope this is what you are asking about.
