General Cycling Discussion - lightest bike rack?

which brand is the lightest bike rack in which you can attach it to your seat post? i currently have a bike rack that is mounted on the back of the frame on my rockhopper. but now i want to ride my sirrus to work but don't wanna mount a rack on there. i want to be able to take it off whenever and use it when i ride to work.. any ideas?

Topeak has a couple of nice ones. Their lightest one doesn't use a quick release, though, you attach it to your seat post using a bracket with hex bolts.

Sound like you need a rack that has a quick release set up to take it off and put it on easily.

it's ok if it doesn't have quick release. even with hex bolts, it wont' take me too long to take them apart. which one of the topeak is the lightest one that you know of? can you post a pic or link? thanks!

You might want to rethink the seatpost attached rack. Feather-weight is not something that is usually desirable in a rack. More often the load is going to be many times heavier than the rack so negligible weight is saved by a lightweight rack.

If you want something that attaches and detaches easily and will allow you to carry small loads without a frame mounted rack, then try a Carridice saddlebag.

For a QR system, the Carradice SQR is hard to beat. It has a much better load/weight ratio than a seatpost-mounted rack + top-bag.
Look into a Tubus Fly rack. These mount on the frame, but it is the lightest rack available. It is less than half the weight, and can take 3 times the load of any seatpost rack.

thanks alphamoose. i'm gonna have to check out the topeak one. as for the SQR.. i don't think i would go for that one. I'm not looking for a heavy-duty rack. this is just for casual rides. for work, my pack is not heavier than 15lbs so it should be ok. if it's going to be too heavy then i just ride my rockhopper with a rear attached rack.

ok.. i've tried the topeak QR road. that one is just too small for me. plus i don't like the fact that it's attached to the seatpost cuz it hard to get it straight.. i tighten it as much as possible, but sometimes when i turn and hit some bumps in the road.. it ended up leaning toward the right or the left.

so here i am again.. asking which type of "attached" rear racks are available? i've seen some sites that categorized them as either expedition, or others... anyone here has a lightweight attached rear rack that holds at least 20lbs?
