Southern California - Routing help

I need a bit of help with a route. I want to ride from San Diego (Point Loma) up to LA (Santa Monica) for the weekend and back in a few weeks for a regatta. I figure leave early Friday and come back Monday morning. Mapquest has it at 133 miles each way so it shouldn't be too bad as it is mostly flat. Getting from Point Loma to Oceanside along the coast is pretty straight forward but after that is a bit of a mystery. How can I get through Pendleton, does anyone know the hours or can I ride the highway shoulder for that section? Once clear of and how do I get through San Ysidro, what is the best route that wont add too many miles on?

You can ride through Camp Pendleton, but there are certain hours. Something like 7am to 4pm. You can also just take the 5 and exit at Las Pulgas.

I'll let someone else explain how to get from there to Orange County. I'm not that great with instructions.

Are you sure you mean San Ysidro? San Ysidro is at the US / Mexico border. If you start in Point Loma, you will be north of there.

After you exit the Las Pulgas gate, there is a small parking lot on the eastern side of the freeway. Enter this lot and go through the opening at the back of it. You will then ride on a bike path that parallels the freeway. You'll come to another gate at the San Onofre State Park but there is an opening for bikes. The route continues through the park and past the power plant.

About a mile past the plant, there is a turnout. Go into the turnout and cross the road. Enter another opening in a fence and you will be another bike path. When this path ends you will be in San Clemente.

The route is very well marked and simple. You will probably see a lot of other cyclists. It's a nice route.

Thanks Grumpy. Any advice on getting through OC other than staying on the coast? Didn't know if you stay inland to keep it from winding around the coast and making it too much longer.

I always ride on the coast but I'm from Oceanside so I'll let someone else advise you through Orange County.
