Foo - Help with a decision....( Knife inquiry)

So, a few of you may remember a thread I posted about a good survival knife. After alot of research, It came down to two, the cold steel srk, and the Becker bk2 (now owned by kabar, but becker moved over with the brand). I like the SRK, it has a nice feel, good heft, nice sheath. The becker though, i'm on the fence about. It's a beefy knife, and weighs alot. I mean, it has the tang that belongs on a machete. You can obviously beat the living hell out of this knife, and it won't break. The quality in the knife is there, but the sheath seems a bit cheesy..here some pics, whatcha all think???

I like the SKR but in the end you have to carry it. Which do you feel more comfortable with and what fits your needs.

Nice choices. Looks to be 2 very well thought out knives you bought.

Heavy is fine if you have heavy chores. Otherwise, the Cold Steel would be the one I'd carry.

I don't like my Cold Steel knife.
I have a Specter and so does the clone. They are folders, and with both (bought 6 months apart) the blade has slight movement when the open.

The steel is very nice (San Mai) but the construction design is flawed.

Paul also has the Sisu, also a San Mai blade, and it's really nice.

I very much like the handle material that Cold Steel uses.
Not owned a Ka-Bar yet.

As I'm still happy with my $30 Gerber, I can't speak from anything but aesthetics. I think the Cold Steel is the more attractive of the two. :)

Gotta say, i'm leaning on the srk. The bk2 has it's place, like hammering nails, but would be really heavy to carry. I may keep both,, since frankly, they weren't really all that expensive, but for carrying purposes, I think i'll go with the SRK.

I have two leatherman waves I use at work and the other at home, great multi tools and well built. One will make it's way into the backpack as well.

Allen, I think I've told you before about how I have a Cold Steel Voyager X2. I neither like the cheap materials used nor do I like the blade's bevel profile. If it had a more durable steel, and a thicker blade design, it would be a great knife. Right up there with the big assed Darrel Ralph designs mass produced by the late great Camillus. But it's cheap and poorly designed, if big and handy.

The SRK looks like it has a better point and a better bevel design, but I guess if my knife is any reason to guess, I'd be weary of the steel quality. However, I'm sure it is more than capable of many years of good service if properly maintained. My Voyager does all right when I use it.

Camilius used to own becker, when they went under, they gave the rights back to Mr. Becker, and he went to kabar. I've seen the SRK wedged between the 2x6's of a marine PT wall and used as a step. Strong knife. All the survival sights raved about it....

Judging by the pics, the SRK is a reasonably sized Bowie knife. In my experience, the Bowie is easily the best fixed blade system ever designed. Hard to go wrong with a Bowie, especially if lots of people suggest a specific model.

I like the San Mai steel (sandwich steel, hard core, soft sides), but the rest of the knife's construction is not up to par. The Sisu is a decent blade though, all be it overpriced.

You can always get a new sheath made.

i was gonna say - looks like the SRK has a more ergonomic handle. But if you were going camping, etc I'd like to have the BK2 around for the heavy duty stuff. Like you say, if you can afford to hang on to both, I would.

I carried a SRK through Officer Candidate School and The Basic School (6 months of infantry training all Marine O's go through) I think I said that in the original post.. .it cut down trees, opened cans, dug fox holes... great knife. I also caried through my first tour in Iraq... changed out for a SOG my seond tour, just because it looked cooler.. the SRK is a great knife.... dont ask me why a REMF like me needed a big ass knife.. but you never know.
