Just got my trainer two weeks ago. I've done one legged drills outdoors no problems. But I was really having difficulty doing them on the trainer I'd get going smoothly but when I tried to get cadence above 80 I'd develop a clank near the bottom of my pedal stroke. Once I got the clank I couldn't get rid of it: lowering my cadence ior shifting gears higher or lower wouldn't help. Any ideas of what I could be doing wrong or do I just need to keep on riding the trainer?
Too funny. I tried some one legged intervals tonight for the first time. One of the CTS series.
Was never a smooth stroke. Thought maybe it was just me being uncoordinated. Hoping I get better with practice.

you need more practice. one legged drills are tough to do on anything except a spinbike with a monster fixed flywheel. on a trainer you have to be really good. that means, keep clanking away and blowing your legs up.
increase your one legged cadence.
127.0.0.1 here can do over 160rpm for 30 seconds on each leg, it has to
be smooth, and it kinda smooths itself out the faster you go. I do want to commit suicide
in the middle of it though, maximum agony, and the fear that my resting leg will
somehow get sucked into my wheel. there is no -good- way to park your unused leg, so
I let it hang... that is hard in itself.

OLDs are all about spinning circles. I find them to be easiest when I focus on pulling my foot backwards on the down stroke. The upstroke seems to take care of itself.

nope. not at all.
when i am doing high rpm drills, I can kick 211-230 with both legs. after a few 2-legged runs to the
stratosphere, I can do one legged drills between 160-170 and hold it for at least 30 seconds
above 160. usually though I stay at 110 one legged. reaching 160 is just experimental really, but I
can do it anytime... on a resistance trainer that is. it takes practice and it's ugly to the mind and soul
the longest 10 seconds on earth are between 20 and 30secs doing these high speed drills lemme tell ya.

Kudos to anyone who can do 160 OLD/ILT. When I spin my brains out (both legs, ~10 seconds) I probably get to 160, but no way with one leg.
I started doing ILT regularly last fall. Yesterday I counted it at about 115-120 and yes, the last 10 seconds hurt. But it feels pretty good for a minute or so at a mellow speed closer to 90 rpm.
As someone else mentioned, it helps if I focus on the back-and-up portion of the stroke -- hamstrings and hip flexors mostly. The "scraping mud off your shoe" image helps, too.
