Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - How much is this mixte?

Hi you guys! It's my first time posting here in c&v. I'm interested in buying this univega mixte off craigslist. It looks good, but no chain and looks like it needs some parts upgraded. Is the seller's price ($150) fair? I think I want to haggle it down to $100, $120 at the most.

Bah, it's pretty, but if the fork is bent I probably shouldn't buy it.

+1 Fork is definitely bent. I would pass on this one.

Also price is high, even if it did not have a bent fork, given it is the bottom end Univega with high ten steel frame. And where is the rear brake? With a good fork, in ready to ride condition (and complete), a bike like that around here would be less than $100. I sold a lot nicer Panasonic (12 speed), looked like NOS, with a cromoly frame, for $135. And it took a while.

Local bike shop (saw this while picking up some bike shipping boxes) has a nicely re-furbished Univega Arrow Speed (pretty sure that was the model, first word was certainly Arrow) on the floor marked at $94. New tires, cables etc etc. A bike that like could be packed/shipped and at your door for under $150.

And that's not even a real mixte! You should hold out for the real deal; they're far more hip!

I bought this mixte for $10.00 at a local thrift, I overhauled the entire bike and sold it in rideable condition for 150. The frame was also cro-molly and it had decent components. Keep an eye out, but if a bike needs overhauled try not to spend much over 50 (unless it's a much higher end bike). Garage sale season is right around the corner, lots of pretty bikes to be had.

Is this one better? How much do you think I'd spend building it up? If not too much I think it'll be a great bike to learn repairs on over the summer.

I am not sure, but that may be a uo18 model. How much you spend to build that up could vary a lot, and probably depends on luck. First, problems may arise from finding parts because it is French. The cheapest way to build it up would be to find a donor bike, other than that you could end up spending good money picking up missing pieces. I don't think the price is a crazy deal considering the condition, I also am not crazy about the way the seller has it sitting on the chain ring. I think it is a pretty bike, and could be great, I also think you could find a better deal.

Just for reference, I found the brown Miyata for 10.00 complete, that was a rare deal. I sold it in almost brand new original condition for 150.00 and probably would have negotiated lower if the buyer asked me to.

Well, I'll contact the seller and see if I can get it for 25-30...considering that this is SoCal I dunno if they will go any lower. Hopefully the local bike kitchen will have parts that'll work; otherwise there may be parts on craigslist too from all those fixie conversions. I'm hoping not to spend more than $150 all in all, but max I'm willing to shell out is about $180.

One thing is for sure, the Peugeot looks way nicer than the Univega you saw earlier. The downtube shifters are a plus also. It looks like it is missing the wheels, Rear derailer, freewheel, seat post and saddle. I bet the seat post is a goofy size, maybe some forum members could cut you some deals on the stuff you need. I assume SoCal prices are probably higher than Ohio in winter, still try to talk him down just a little.

This one is a pass but I'm thinking mixte frames are about to become very expensive in this coming season. I'm thinking that $250 will be the standard price for a good Peugeot/Motobecane in the very near future. Can't say why u I have a gut feeling that they're the next in line, hipster discovery.

Looks like a rear brake may be needed, too.

I am going to be picking up the Univega Mixte from the local bike shop and shipping it out to 'where they send the giant hamsters in'. It will come in with shipping under $150 and has already been gone over/adjusted/cleaned and new tired by the shop.

What I'm finding is that's it's hard to find mixte's that aren't generic hi-ten steel. That Peugeot is definately in the hi-ten category but if the paint is in good shape and it isn't rusty I'd go for it. All the wierd French bits are there with the frame so the only concern would be the cottered crank and maybe the plastic Simplex bits. If you're just looking for a frame to learn with this one wouldn't be bad.

There are some better quality mixtes, but they are not easy to find. For what it's worth, my Motobecane Grand Jubile mixte is Vitus 172 tubing, so it qualifies as a much higher quality bike than most mixtes.
