Sup foo?! Just a little story I have for you.

Today I got a call from this number 210-568-5796. I spoke with a Spanish speaking gentleman informing me that he was a smuggler of illegal aliens, and that they had transported a family member of mine and had him in their posession.

The funny thing is; I don't have any family in Mexico. I do know spanish, but I also know Japanese, and some Italian and Portuguese. So I decided to talk with this guy.

The first time I just left them on the line for 0:30 min until they hung up. Next day they called again and I told them that YES, I am waiting for a family member to be delivered by the name of "Delphino" (I know it's not very authentic, but I had to make it up on the spot). I asked them if it was him they had transported. The caller seemed flustered and confused and said he would check and call back. I then asked "why do you have to check didn't you smuggle him?". He said that yes but that there were many smugglers involved in the operation.

He called back and informed me that it was INDEED "Delphino" they were holding, and that I would need to pay $1600 dollars to get him. I then told them that "I am surprised that 'Delphino' did not pay for himself" and asked him if "Delphino" had not given them any money. They said they would check and call back in 10 min. They called again and they said that yes "Delphino" had INDEED given them money, but he only gave them half. I told them that I did not have any money with me now, but that I would go and get some from my siblings fast, and it would be ready in an hour.

One hour later they called back asking if I had the money. I told them that I had spoken with my sister and that she said that "she had spoken with "Delphino" last night and he had not left the 'pueblo' at all". They then pretended to wonder who they had with them then, and said that "surely Delphino is scheduled on the next trip". I then said that "I surely hope he is".

Is there even "plueblos" still in mexico???

I am thinking of calling them at like 2-5am (because I am awake at that hour) from a disposable phone I have and prank call them. Maybe try scams on them too. I'll do that until I get bored. :D

Any suggestions from Foo?

I'd consider getting the San Antonio law enforcement agencies involved before I do anything more.

Hmmm Youre right that is a Texas area code. I am located inside LA county in CA. Do you think that they base their operations from San Antonio and then have other people pick up the cash here? Or do they probably move? Or maybe they just bought the phone with that #, are here all along. The # might just be a way to throw people off?

The guy seemed pretty stupid if you ask me.

I'd send the number to INS, honestly. It's probably a disposable phone itself, though. Something like Virgin Mobile or Trakphone.

I considered it but dont think I will do that. The thing is I am not sure if they can do anything. There was no crime actually commited. The crime they are claiming to have commited (illegal alien smuggling), I am not sure my local PD is 'allowed' to handle. Even if I call the right agency for the job these guys are obviously not really doing this stuff. because $800 is NOTHING when you talk about smuggling illegals. So I think they will not be able to do anything.

Where I live if you ask people they will tell you how much it costs. with the average being around $5,000. Unless you know some one. Even then the cheapest I heard was $2,500 because that particular person was a family member of a smuggler. Depending how comfortably you want to be smuggled it can cost up to $10,000, or you can take your chances on the dessert on your own for free (that is freaking insane).

Do a reverse scam. Give them a cashiers for $10,000 and tell them they need to... oh wait, it's 4:20. I'll be back in a minute... or two.

I would tell him if he was truly someone from my family, by now he'd be offering ME $1,600 just to get him out of his house.

Tell him you need $100 sent over before you can access your freezed account at the bank to get him the remainder. He'll fall for it.

[in another time line I'm actually funny]

Hey, dude.

What?

Some dude, like, wants me to send him a naked picture while holding a sign. Then he'll send the money.

What sign?

Something about "bikeforum R greatz" or something.

Ok, cool. How much is he sending?

The full $1600.

You told him about the escrow service?

Yeah, he says no problem.

Cool, well send the picture already. What name will he transfer the money under?

Eatmyass.

What did you say?

Eatmyass

Hey, dude, why the hell you go to be so rude, disrespecting me like that?

No, he's called eatmyass.

Oh. Dude, you just got scammed. You didn't send the picture yet?

.....like 5 minutes ago.

Regarding the "Pueblos". I'm not Mexican but I bet they have them. Pueblo means "Town". In PR is kinda like the equivalent of a County/City. Each "Pueblo" has a Mayor and a city hall and it's own local police force... you get the idea.

About the number, caller IDs can be fooled using VOIP services, or maybe it's a disposable one like Tom said.
