Mountain Biking - Bad wipe out today!!Thank god for my helmet.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
It was in the 60's today in Atlanta, so I took out one of the MTN bikes to get some trail riding in. About 3/4s mile in, on a downhill,I hit a major mudpit. Literly fliped over my bars, and was thrown several feet. The side of my helmet smashed on a large root. I hit so hard I was thinking well life was fun,"funny how fast your brain works in panic" I got up stunned, and covered in mud. I think I did bruise or crack 2 of my ribs. It hurts like all ****, to sit stand up cough or move in any way. But I am still alive. Moral of the story. For any of you who go out with out helmets "PLEASE, put those things on your noggin" I know for 100% sure, if I did not have mine on today, there would of been brain matter spatted on the ground and trees. I admit, I don't always wear mine when on paved trails, "thats going to change" but I always wear on dirt. I thank God I am able to type this right now.

Glad you're ok. Yeah pics of helmet when you're better please.
The helmet I had on today was a $20 Wally World special, it pretty much just soaked up the impact, That was my point to the thread, wear a helmet. I can post a pic still if you want to see it, but it looks to have very little damage.

My advice is not to sit, standup, cough,or move in any way. That way you'll feel no pain.
You lost me at the "60 degrees" part.

Glad youre alright!
I am still getting over a concussion from weeks ago......Strong believer of wearing a helmet:thumb:

How did I lose you? I am in the south, we only have winter weather 50% of the time during winter.:p

i did the whole flipping over the handle bars thing this past summer i had the same sort of situation. my head would have been in a world of pain without my helmet on. Im not sure if i bruised my ribs or cracked them either, I should have gone to a doctor, but it took me almost 2 months for the pain to start going away in my chest. So good luck to you I know how you feel.
yes helmets save lives. although kids never wear them

i always wear a lid when on the trails. i don't wear one whilst commuting, but i do wear a helmet while road cycling at higher speeds.

TWO MONTHS!!!! God I don't even want to think ill hurt for that long! Yesterday I thought I was feeling better, so dummy me was working around the home front, slowly, but getting crap done. Not today! Been in pain big time. Ive been told by many, that as long as I don't have any probs with breathing, and I don't, there most likely not broke, just bruised, or maby slightly cracked. And going to the Dr is going to do nothing but drain my $$$$. I have pain pills if I need them, but only taking them at night to sleep. I am gona chill for a few more days, and hope I can at get back on my path or road bike by next weekend. I think dirt riding is out of the ? for a bit.

Even if it looks like your helmet held up OK, get a new one!

yep 2 months until all pain was gone. I couldnt sleep on my stomache or side for a while either because of the pressure so i had to sleep flat on my back it wasnt very fun. Good luck to you I hope it doesnt last as long as mine did.
Sorry to hear about your spill.
I had my own in Oct and it sounds almost identical. I did the over the bars thing and landed on my shoulder and head. I also either bruised or cracked my bottom left ribs. For me it was about a month and a half until most of the pain was gone.
Tomorrow is day 7, feeling much better. Back to most activities, but still afraid to do any major lifting or riding for that matter. I don't want to stunt the healing process.

I used to ride on the Silver Comet Trail with nothing but a hat. It's a straight line, one way each side bike lane for chrissake. After I witnessed a bloody crash or two, I started wearing my helmet. A year later, I had my time in the barrel. I hooked a tire in front of me in a fast paceline, slid back off of it and all hell broke loose. Bars spin 180 degrees, wheel flexes, you pivot around the front axle and are piledriven into the pavement. I forgot to duck fast enough. Cracked helmet/Bell Ghisalo right at the temple, woke up 2.5 hours later in the hospital. At least this time, I wasn't awake to enjoy the cleaning and dressing of the road rash. If I wasn't wearing a helmet, I would have been gone, no question. I had a level 3 concussion, took 3 years for all the side effects to be gone. I don't even pedal up and down the street, checking gear adjustments without a helmet any more.
I just found out from a close friend, his next door neighbor, who is a roadie. He was riding a couple months ago with one of his friends, both had helmets on, but the friend has been known not to wear his helmet tight enough. Not sure of the full details, but on a downhill they rubbed tires, the friend being in the back, wiped out, head got scalped and split open. He is alive, but still in the hospital. From what im told decent amount of brain damage. He can speak and do most functions. But one EX of things he does now, his wife and a friend will be in the room with him , a nurse will come in to assist him, and he will try to grope her and say real sexist things to her, in front of his wife, that he forgets is also there. I just hear in general its not a good situation.
For the poster who asked for pics, or its not real. Nothing to take pics of. My helmet and bike is still intact. Trust me if I could make you feel my pain in the ribs, you would know its FOR REAL!!!:thumb:
