Must be under 8 dollars.

List name, vintage, and where you get it at.

If you buy something someone recommends, and you don't like it. Say so. But don't attack anyone else's taste. It's subjective.

The purpose is to make it easier to select something, and since a lot of us can't spring a bajillion bucks for a friday night vino, 8 dollars seems to work.

Bella Sera Pinio Grigio - $6.99. Fred Meyers Superstores. Don't know the vintage, but I've not had a bad bottle yet. Somewhat sweeter than other pinio grigio's, but goes down easy. Reminds me of some white wines I used to get in Germany. Definitely not the usual white wine.

$8.99- I know, it's more than 8 bucks, but panhandle the 0.99 if you have to, it's worth it.

Straight from France to local grocery stores. Get some in ya.

I regularly see cheap (in price) whites here for under eight bucks at QFC and Fred Meyer. Chateau St. Michelle Riesling is one... excellent riesling and can be found almost anywhere. I've even seen some of their merlots and pinot noirs for that price when they're on sale. Maybe you need to drop the price threshold a few bucks to get at the really cheap wines. ;)

A few choice economical palate pleasers as reviewed at: http://www.tcsn.net/rags/bum/ :

Cisco
18% alc. by vol.

"Known as "liquid crack," for its reputation for wreaking more mental havoc than the cheapest tequila. Something in this syrupy hooch seems to have a synapse-blasting effect not unlike low-grade cocaine. The label insists that the ingredients are merely "citrus wine & grape wine with artificial flavor & artificial color," but anyone who has tried it knows better. Tales of Cisco-induced semi-psychotic fits are common. Often, people on a Cisco binge end up curled into a fetal ball, shuddering and muttering paranoid rants. Nudity and violence may well be involved too. Everyone who drinks this feels great at first, and claims, "It's not bad at all, I like it." But, you really do not want to mess around with this one, because they all sing a different tune a few minutes later. And by tune, I mean the psychotic ramblings of a raging naked bum."

MD 20/20
18% alc. by vol.

"As majestic as the cascading waters of a drain pipe, MD 20/20 is bottled by the 20/20 wine company in Westfield, New York. This is a good place to start for the street wine rookie, but beware; this dog has a bite to back up its bark. A few years ago, this drink scrapped the name "Mad Dog 20/20" and replaced it with the more sophisticated "MD 20/20". You'll find this beverage as often in a bum's nest as in the rock quarry where the high school kids sneak off to drink. This beverage is likely the most consumed by non-bums, but that doesn't stop any bums from drinking it! Our research indicates that MD 20/20 is the best of the bum wines at making you feel warm inside. Some test subjects report a slight numbing agent in MD 20/20, similar to the banana paste that the dentist puts in your mouth before injecting it with novocaine. Anyone that can afford a dentist should steer clear of this disaster. Available in various nauseating tropical flavors that coat your whole system like bathtub scum, but only the full "Red Grape Wine" flavor packs the 18% wallop."

Night Train Express
17.5% alc. by vol.

"Don't let the 0.5% less alcohol by volume fool you, the Night Train is all business when it pulls into the station. All aboard to nowhere - woo wooo! The night train runs only one route: sober to stupid with no roundtrip tickets available, and a strong likelihood of a train wreck along the way. This trainyard favorite is vinted and bottled by E&J Gallo Winery, in in Modesto, CA. Don't bother looking on their web page, because they dare not mention it there. As a clever disguise, the label says that it is made by "Night Train Limited." Some suspect that Night Train is really just Thunderbird with some Kool-Aid-like substance added to try to mask the Clorox flavor. Some of our researchers indicated that it gave them a NyQuil-like drowsiness, and perhaps this is why the put "night" in the name. The picture (above right) shows that the subject that drank Night Train is down for the count, while the Cisco guzzling subject is ready to rock. Guaranteed to tickle your innards."

Thunderbird and Wild Irish Rose are also 2 good bum wine connoisseur favorites.

Here's the lineup:

My wine story is a little different bent..70 mile daily average bike tour..We were passing through some of the Nation's best vintners. Santa Barbara wine district..For over 200 miles I had been telling my cylcing buddies how great this vintner is near Santa Maria,Calif...Builing up their expectations, so that we would go out of the way to visit this vintner.? We did..
They were not disappointed..On a tiring tour who wants really cheap wine. Not us..About $20 a bottle for a really great Rancho Sisqueoc Merlot..But the wine presenter was quite determined to NOT sell it to us..
Said the ride on a bumpy road- Foxen Canyon Rd.- would tear the tannin to shreds.
Of course, she was right in that the road was a mess.....The county was doing some maintenacne work on the road and it would still be bumpy even if you had rear and front shocks.
We insisted and paid the $20 . Got to the camp site in Solvang..About 40 miles of riding...The Merlot was awesome...It was not available in any local wine shop.Slept the best that night of six nights of camping.

Welllp, I always have had luck with the selection at Trader Joe's. They have ALOT of wines under 8 bucks. I have gotten wines there that I didn't like, but none that have really been lousy.

If not TJ's then the local grocery for a big-a$$ bottle of Gallo Burgundy. Don't remember exactly how much, and it's not vintage, but it goes real good with a little orange juice and some soda water for summer spritzers/sangria.

I like a Lambrusco for cheap, easy-drinking wine during the summer (and the rest of the year too). Riunite Brand is more expensive but it is easy to find cheaper brands out here.

Up here in the great white north you can buy Rotting Grape Wine for about 6.50 US. Vintage is most likely last week. It tastes better than it sounds, I use it for poaching pears.

Once a year I go on multiple day bike tours..I think that calls for a splurge..But If you must have under $8.
Trader Joes' has plenty.. "TraderJoe's French Market- a generic Bordeaux, ok for $3.. Georges Dubeuf Cabernet Sauvigon $7.99, Domaine Pichot, Vouvray- $8.99( common on for a good wine, you can dig out .99 cents in pocket change...
Should I go on a bike tour of Michigan..Which I would like to.
Leelanau Cellars 'Winter White.'$6.97 Big Ten Ann Arbor, Traverse City Cherry Wine.$6.49, and St. Julian Chambourcin-$7,49. Whenever I go to Michigan I bring back the Cherry Wine for the holidays.
I look for small vintners.Bargains can be found all the time..Do not like the big jug wines such as Inglenook. Too generic, no character.

I'll 2nd the Château St. Michelle Riesling, and add Hogue Johannisberg Riesling. A crisp white wine with a clean finish. (Low-alcohol). Wait for the sales at Surdyks, Haskell's or MGM's... ($7~$8).

OK, I don't remember the vinter, and I'm a work in a school system where alcohol-related web pages are filtered, so I can't look this up for better details. The wine is called Big House Red. I've bought it for about $9.00 to $10.00 a bottle.

I regularly get some Romanian Pinot Noirs from the local store.... River Route is the name, 2001, 3 for a tenner, (about $17 for three?) and of course it's one of the healthiest grapes there is for yer heart...

Lovely colour, and it's damned tasty!

I'm sure it could be sourced on the net, 12 bottles would be cheap.

i'm a big fan of any of the Blackstone Wines... particularly the Merlot, and the Pinot Noir... both can be had for right around $8

Also, if you are out in North Carolina.. there is a good winery out there called Shelton Vineyards... Check out the Merlot (about $14, but worth it) Evne their Zephyr Red (about $7 a bottle) is excellent for a standard table red... they have a website and can mail you some wine http://www.sheltonvineyards.com

enjoy

Does it have to be in a bottle? When I go to punk shows, I generally pick up a box of red and carry it around with me. It's easy to share, all you do is pour it into someone's mouth, no cooties! After a while, you begin to feel like johnny alcoholseed, and then you start to give bearhugs and talk to people about John Cougar Mellencamp who couldn't care less. Box of wine is awesome!

Now THIS is my kind of topic!!:).
Prosody, the Big House red you posted about is produced by Bonny Doon Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains area. They also produce a Big House White and a Pink as well; all with screw caps!
By the way, I've been in the retail wine business for over 22 years.:):):)

Ah, good 'ol Night Train. Ya gotta love that label. The locomotive, headlight ablaze, cutting through an inky, purple night. Too bad the stuff is undrinkable.

Ok, if this is starting up again I've got one that you are sure to enjoy. However, due to inflation, and your gigantic tax cut over the time since the majority of posts, I'm bumping the max to $11.

Secret House Willamette Valley Riesling 2004, $11 This wine is so mellow, just sweet enough to enjoy after a fine meal, or with friends in the hot tub. A bouquet that transports you to the wonderful gardens at Secret House in July, and texture on the tounge like china's best silk.

I also have some pinot noir for you, but I'll have to check the prices and re-adjust the limit.

One more for you.
Benton-Lane Pinot Noir, 2001 Willamette Valley, $10 if you shop or haggle.
Great choice with any meal, but excellent with grilled salmon (wild of course) and lentil pilaf. Clear with excellent color, flavor opens in the mouth and clean on the way down.

BTW, touring in Oregon? they have a nice tasting room, and love to talk wine.
