Classic & Vintage - teflon upgrade

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Okay, the lined cable housing issue has me a bit confused. If I just want to replace the old non-lined cables and housing on my old friction shift, centerpull bike, will just any of the teflon cable stuff work?
Do I have to worry about "Shimano compatible," or anything like that? The old bike has Suntour barcons and the brake levers are Weinmann road -- will, for example, the Jagwire Hyper cables work? I haven't even measured the diameter of normal old cheapo housing, but the frame has these cylindrical sleeves on the top tube that receive the housing, and the old stuff fits in there pretty well. Will the lined stuff work as is with those too?

In general, it should work. But some vintage housing is significantly narrower than modern lined housing and may not fit your braze-ons, ferrules, etc.

Make sure that what you buy for the brake-cables IS specified as Brake-Cable housing. Do NOT use shifter-housing for brakes. You can, however, use brake-cable housing for shifters.
Happy Trails!

Thanks for your responses. Looks like I need to determine the inside diameter of the ferrules and make sure the housing will fit. Thanks again.
