Classic & Vintage - 1984 Trek 720 with Acorn Bags

This is my 1984 Trek 720 with newly acquired front and rear acorn bags. It has Phil Wood 40 hole tourng hubs, ultegra cranks, green Brooks b-17 champion special saddle wit a Nitto s83 seatpost, Rivendell speedblend tires, wood fenders, and shimano 600 barend shifters. I think it is finally finished.

I think Grant Peterson might have made more money on this project than if he had sold a complee bike! I can't throw stones, since I've bought a lot of stuff from Rivendell too.

Very nice job bikecopp; though it seems to me that you should be on the lookout for a 63 or 64 cm frame.

Hey Charles, Yes, I could probably use a little larger size considering my other bikes are 60cm's, but the way I have it set up right now it is pretty comfortable. With the tires I only have about and inch or two of clearance in my crotch. If I were buying a new bike I would make sure it wold be the exact right size, but considering this is my Holy Grail of thrift store finds that I paid $10.00 for I can't be too picky. It has had some upgrades obviously, but when I got it it had a Brooks Pro and dura-ace hubs.

I am trying to debate putting more money into it or selling it and buying a larger Atlantis or A. Homer Hilsen. I have a 100 PBH and ride with a 120 stem on the 720.
Are you riding 700C or the original size 27in rims? I love how it looks.

Very nicely done. I've noticed that some people use a bag support like this (http://www.velo-orange.com/visabagsu.html) under their saddlebags. Do you find that the acorn saddlebag stays out of the way of your legs and avoids swinging without the use of such a support?

So far I haven't noticed a problem. The saddlebag tapers from narrow near the seatpost to wide at the rear and is pretty secure to prevent swaying. I haven't fully loaded it yet but I'll post when I do.

Love the front bag. Should be plenty of room for the light. I might have to move the bell, but I think it would fit.

these are 700c wheels. The only reason I would get rid of this one would be to get an Atlantis. I love that bike but can't afford the price right now.

I concur. Really well done. I love the look of the Acorn bags with the wood fenders. My only critique (if you're asking), aesthetically anyway, is that if you won't be using the racks, they do cover up those great fenders and removing them would create a much better harmony top to bottom, front to back. If however, they serve a purpose, than never mind all that as it's function over form. What are those racks by the way? Nittos? VO? I like that they're not chrome.

I'll have to check when I get home tonight. They are double sided spd pedals but I can't remember who makes them. I'll get back to you on it.

The pedals are made by VP. Not sure of the model though.

Nice, except for the fenders and the tires. But that's just my touring snob opinion...
