Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Chain tensioner for non track ends

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

From what I have seen, most tensioner are made for track ends. Does anyone make a chain tensioner for bikes that do not have track ends. I have horizontal drop outs on an old Bianchi road bike.

This is in regards to fixed gear bikes.

I remember seeing one in this forum that attached to the chainstay. It was basically a fixed position derailleur pulley that you slid back on the stay until you had tension, might have been for the downhillers or something. I ended up getting my local shop to sell me an eccentric rear hub for just over $100. They also gave me an old rim and spokes to build up the wheel. It's not a cheap option, but it's really elegant and works very well.

You're looking for something like Surly Tugnutt for a horizontal drop out right?

Or...just get a cheapo dual screw BMX tensioner and place the screws against the back of the drop, adjusting as needed.

Exactly!!

It would seem to me that with all of these converted bikes out there, someone should invent this device.

Do you have a picture or link to one of these. I don't now anything about bmx bikes.

Tensioners aside but with a tuggnuts in mind -- when is someone going to make a bottle opener that mounts to my bicycle? Or a bottle cage with an opener integrated... oh yeah.

Kinda off subject, but I thought I would show you all the bottle opener my sister found me for xmas last year. It seems to be homemade, she didn't even remember where she got it, just that she found it and thought of me.

I gotta have one! I'll see what I have for spare parts. Shouldn't be too hard to make.

Those are made by Resource Revival.

I've seen them in catalogs. I think Velogear used to carry them, but I can't find it on their website.

Back in the day they use to have a Campy fork end with a little notch filed on it. A combination opener/key chain, I knew I should have gotten one, they were chrome and it was cool!!
