So today I did my first metric century. I hadn't really planned on doing a metric, more like 58-60, but a road closure made me extend my ride a mile or two. When I got in the neighborhood I was short about a mile so I made a few out-and-backs to get it above 63 miles. I ended up hitting 63.5 miles.

Here is the a shot of my GPS:

I ended up drinking all the water I took with me, which included 2 bottles and a camelbak. The last 2 miles were awful and I was glad to be out of the saddle.

I shot a little video along the way. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNyKishRHxs) Most of the ride was on roads, but I like to hit this MUP because I like to look at all the planes in the boneyard. The wind it a little annoying so you might want to turn the speakers down a bit.

Overall it was a fun ride.

Then I saw your pic:

Congratulations! If 166 is your HR at the end of a few out/back cooldowns I'd hate to see what you were cranking in the middle of the ride. You must be a youngster.

Good job. That's a good workout. I've always wondered about that calories burned calculation on the Garmin - do you input your weight into the unit so that it is considered in the calculated total?

I'm 28, but I do have a rapid heart beat. My average for the ride was 150, the max was 180.

On their website it says they take into account weight, speed and distance, not your HR.

On this blog post (http://garmin.blogs.com/my_weblog/2006/10/its_marathon_ti.html) "Peg" says
Currently, our Edge and Forerunner fitness devices calculate calories burned based on time, distance and elevation data, along with the user profile info (age, weight, gender) you set up in your device. You're right in that factoring in heart rate would make the calculations more accurate, and Garmin's working on product developments that would improve the accuracy of these calculations. That was in 2006.

 Isn't a "metric century" 64.5 miles in the western time zone? :D

Thank you all! It is a really cool feeling to roll out of the garage, pedal 60 miles and roll back into the garage. I've got a couple 65-70 miles race/rides coming up, then I set my sights on an imperial century.

Congratulations. Its always a great feeling completing a new personal best. I also found that each time you reach a new level, somehow you can't help but aim for the next one. Keep up the riding!

Happy riding,
André
