Fifty Plus (50+) - If you don't drink coffee, you're crazy...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have a choice- Coffee or Cognac. Too many years of living in France to give me other options
I've been told I was crazy for more obscure reasons than this.
I read the article, and once again thought that Woody Allen in the movie Sleeper probably had it right.

Damn, I am quitting coffee because it seems to really make my GERD worse, so it s debilitating heartburn or mental decline...Why does life have to be so hard?

YUCK, I can't stand the smell or taste of coffee!! I spent 6 years between service in the USAF and USN and both swore, I'd:
1. Drink Coffee
2. Start smoking
I'm 53 and haven't done either in my life time so I guess they were wrong, now as to it's effect for mental wellness, LOL, I'm sure I might be "Living Proof", that the study has merit!:twitchy: My brain is 25, my body is 75 and the paychecks never get cashed:injured: You all enjoy the bean juice, I'll just keep on working on my 2nd. childhood:thumb:

Hmmm?
I wonder what these folks will have to say who do not drink coffee for religious reasons?
There are several groups who will not drink or eat stimulants.
BTW, I used to be a 10 cups per day guy. My aging stomach started protesting and I had to cut it down quite a bit.

I used to drink a lot of coffee, but seem to have lost my taste for it. I wouldn't even make it if not for my wife liking it. Maybe that's why she thinks I'm nuts?

I would drink coffee, but it eats a huge hole in my stomach lining. I drink coke for a caffeine/sugar jolt, which probably rots my bones... I take my calcium and hope for the best :)

Alzheimer's is evidently caused by diabetes of the brain. There are plenty of anti-diabetes lifestyle choices other than coffee, including exercise and a high-fiber whole foods diet.

A cup of coffee to start the day,
More civil and reserved.
A cup of coffee to face the race,
My sanity preserved.
My day begins quite early,
Much earlier than most.
Without my morning coffee,
I’d not make it to my post.
If you should chance upon me,
Before I’ve had my brew.
Don’t be alarmed if I should bite,
Upon your backside chew.
Tread softly should there be no Joe,
For my A.M. caffeine Fix.
I rely on it to calm my nerves,
And make me fit to mix.
You wouldn’t invade a Grizzly’s lair,
A wide berth he’d gain, from fear.
So please show me the same regard,
Until the coffee cart’s been here.

Various studies have for years tried to indict coffee as bad for you; it just MUST be...
But nearly every one has found that not only is coffee not nasty, it's downright beneficial in many ways.
Good thing; I've been slugging it down on a daily basis since 1965 or so.

Correct. It's probably the most studied and tested food/drink on the market. I've asked my family doctor, my urologist and my oncologist if I should stop drinking coffee and all three have answered the same way: "WHY?"

You might feel slightly less demented. If it's working, don't mess with it.

That's hard to say. Years ago I switched to decaff and I'm still crazy.:o

I know of 8 good reasons to drink coffee. Right now I can only recall 5 of those positives.
After two or three more cups I'll be functioning at full throttle and will be able to recall all the benefits of drinking coffee, that is, once I compile the list two or three times and combine the unique entries from each list.:twitchy:

Both coffee and pepper would not be approved by our FDA today, way too dangerous for your health. One small problem, both have been ingested for a long time.

Moderation is good. Like coffee. :)
I've read about the coffee and pregnancy issue. The only times in her life that my wife didn't drink coffee was during her pregnancies. When she was pregnant, she couldn't even stand the smell of coffee.
Damn, I am quitting coffee because it seems to really make my GERD worse, so it s debilitating heartburn or mental decline...Why does life have to be so hard?
I use an Aeropress because it makes a smooth low acid coffee. If you use light roasted beans that are naturally low in acid to begin with you may be amazed.

You can get even less acid with cold brewing. I am going to try that soon.

Is it really worth all the effort? Goodness.
When I interviewed for my first job out of College. The guy interviewing me offered me a cup of coffee and when I accepted he said "Good! I've only worked with two guys that didn't drink coffee and I was always suspicious of both of them"

Quote from article:
If you don't think coffee is doing damage to your liver, think again. Zartarian explains, "Caffeine is broken down by the liver through the use of enzymes. The more these enzymes are involved in breaking down caffeine, the less available they are for breaking down other chemicals in the bloodstream. Excessive caffeine use, therefore, causes the liver to work less efficiently at its job of detoxifying the body."
Who is Zartarian? Does he read tea leaves too?:lol::lol:
Therefore coffee damages the liver. That is SOME scary logic.

I like the part about coffee being a mild diuretic, which it is, but I read somewhere one time that it doesn't really matter since coffee itself is virtually all water. It sort of balances itself out.
Also, the 6-8 glasses of water a day has been debunked several times and came from a mid-50s study that was misinterpreted. Not that water is good for you, but I didn't realize that anyone but diet books and diet product companies still pushed the 8 glasses of water a day thing. For that matter, I didn't realize that AOL even existed anymore.
