Stupid question sorry, newbie here. but i'm trying to lower the stem on my bike, if its even possible

The bike is a pre 79 nikishi custom sport 12 speed, stem shifter, 60 cm....I'm trying to lower the stem because its higer than the seat, and looks odd, i'm 6'1.

If there is any more information required in order to get a better response....let me know

Undo the bolt on the top of the stem two or three turns.
If it's now sticking up above the stem, give it a whack to release the binder inside.
Push down on the bars.
Retighten.
If that doesn't do it, you'll need to post more info and/or a picture.

See this link http://sheldonbrown.com/handsup.html
and note the warning about putting the stem too low.

And be prepared to put it back the way it was. Bike adjustments shouldn't be made on the basis of looking 'odd' so much as if they feel good for you riding posture.

Slam it as low as your thighs, diaphragm, neck, and cojones will let you. Some of us have a thing that says if I can't ride a slammed stem then nobody should.

I salute you.

We really ought to start a new thread on slamming stems.
