...to the 50+ board. Now if I can just get the AARP to stop sending me membership kits! That, and getting through what has been an awful Massachusetts winter.

I've been a board member for about a year (with very few posts). Last year was one of my best years on the bike, culminating with a metric century in September - not much by the standards of this board, but I'm planning on completing my first complete century at 50 years old...there's a nice symmetry there.

Anyway, I've lurked on the 50+ board on and off for the past few months. You seem like a nice bunch. I'm glad to be among you.

Since you are a newbie here it's OK that your longest ride is a metric century. We'll expect better next summer.

Welcome!

If you have ben lurking for long- you will realise that your opinions can be changed.

Always room for one more!

But stapfam is right. I got on this forum when I turned 50 in 2008 and I'm already sick of the damn hippies.

Welcome, and take advantage of AARP. Discounts alone (Restaurants, Hotels, Theaters, Other Stores, etc, make it worth the price of admission.....

I have actually been thinking about joining for just the reasons you mention, Wanderer. It would also give my 12 year old something to rank on me about for a couple of months (not that she needs anything new). Thanks for the advice.

And thanks to all for the warm welcome.

AARP starts sending out mailings as soon as a sonogram is done on you grandkids to be.

I have heard from more than one source that some good vacation deals can be had by AARP members. I just can't seem to return the post card.
But any way, whether you ride 100 miles, 10 miles, or 1 mile, it's how much you enjoy the ride that counts.

Yeah, but the junk mail from them increases exponentially after joining. That alone makes me question the wisdom of having joined.

Welcome aboard, dcmurf.

And speaking of the AARP generation, look who turned 65 last month!

Welcome dcmurf. I am beginning to believe cycling begins at 50. I have logged more miles since I turned 50 (it helps that we are empty nesters now). I feel like I am in the best shape since my late 30's.

The chapter of the Arizona bicycling club that I ride with has many members (most in fact) who are 50+. We ride 50 miles every Sat and Sun (some ride one day or the other, some both).

Welcome dcmurf. This can be a great group. But beware, Bicycle saddles, bicycle material, tires, Lance Armstrong can cause a lot of debate. :crash: But there is a lot of good imformation to be gleaned from this group and you have to buy coffee and Pie for everyone.:innocent:

Welcome.
I never did get anything worthwhile from AARP when I was a member. Then, when they decided they knew more about my health care needs than I did, I canceled. For a year or so, they kept sending me invitations to re-join, before they finally stopped, I was already getting invitations to join! They seem to be primarily a PAC, so find out what they lobby for and make sure it is what you want, before you join.

Don't pay any attention to europa, he doesn't know what he's talking about. You don't hav to buy us all coffee and donuts. You have to buy us all pie.

Oh - and I'm not sure because it hasn't happened yet but I think that the only way to get AARP to quit sending you stuff is to die.

Hello dcmurf

I turned 50 last July and did my first century in September, with two of my sons with me. A very good feeling and accomplishment when family is with you. Now to get the grandkids cycling.

If AARP reduces their junk mail by 50%, we can balance the federal budget !

I'm glad you posted that, I was almost going to join just to try to stop the junk mail. I know a number of years ago I sent something somewhere that was suppose to reduce the amount of junk mail you receive. It did seem to slow it down for awhile but did not put an end to it. :(

When the wife turned fifty two years ago it doubled the amount we receive. (She doesn't read this forum so I don't have to worry about giving her age away)

Gee, if it weren't for junk mail, I'd get no mail at all. Somehow, I stopped all the e-mail male enhancement ads and I was gettting lonely.

And welcome to the forum.

AAA offers better discounts than AARP.

Our local factory stores have a 50+ 10% discount every Tuesday. Not every store participants (damn you, Coach!) but those that do get my business.

We're fortunate to receive these benefits at such a young age. I predict that these qualifications will be increased in the next 5 years. Mark my words and consume early and often.

I agree its a bad winter for cycling in Mass. Ice, cold, pot holes, salt and snow all coming more frequently than most previous years. About three years ago we had a winter where I bike commuted at least once a week all winter, not this year.

Welcome, LOL, you don't have a be a "Lance" clone to be a part of the 50+ers, (no matter what some of them might tell you) ;) Whatever you ride, ENJOY it and let us know your adventures or just come on in and give us your "2 cents" as they say!:thumb:

Does that mean I can sometimes post on the 80+ board when they start one?

Again - thanks to all for the welcome. I hope to be more active here than I have been in the past - consider that a warning!

The snow here in Boston is changing over to rain as I type, so I must go shovel before the snow saturates and weighs more than my 15 year old GT Talera (I'm a roadie, but do some trail riding as well).

Pie sounds like a reasonable entry fee - but I'm sure I'm not alone in hoping to shed the holiday pounds before summer. Pie would be counterproductive. I am doing you all a favor by refusing to enable your porcine ways!

I got a great rate on car insurance with them. Over a hundred bucks less a month, I have a teen driver with great grades and no accidents or tickest and Farmers was killing me.

Go ahead, take a break from it, you need one now and then. After a while, your legs will tell you it's time to go for a ride. They like the exercise. You'll also notice a few new pounds hanging around your waistline. It will be time to hit the trail. bk
