Pacific Northwest - It was so cold that......

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My headset tighten up this morning, I could still steer but it was moving freely. Same with my gearing I could not get my front deraulier to change on the first try. Now that the bike is inside a warmen up it is back to normal. I have never had that happen on a bike and I know this was not the coldest morning I have rode. Maybe it was the 40 minutes it spent on the front of a bus speeding down I-5.

Probably... temps are down in the teens in a lot of areas this morning. Alternatively, there might have been some ice in the front derailleur cable.
I couldn't even ride out of my neighborhood this morning, black ice everywhere- even worse than during the ice fog. Ended up driving to the park and ride. Time to look at those directions for making a set of studded tires....

Only spots of ice down the hill in Issaquah. Though all the remaining sand and sticks were frozen solid which gave good traction but one bumpy ride.
rnorris which P&R do you go to Highlands or 900?

I took the short route into work. I usually take the short route when I oversleep. This is the first time for weather. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Try dropping some oil down inside your cable housing. That may help the shifting.

Hi! I usually ride from my place in Klahanie to Highlands P&R and put my bike on the bus there (I work at UW). I then ride as much of the way home as time and conditions permit. I notice that winter conditions can change markedly along the 400 foot climb between downtown Issaquah and the Plateau; we still had snow on the ground and icy roads this morning.

Time to switch to some cold weather lube. I usually just end up drooling snot on my bike enough in this weather to keep things moving freely.:thumb:
Klahanie? So you're the one who nabbed the girl and got her to change her story?:innocent:

I almost had heat stroke this morning.
I am a cold-weather wimp, so I really bundled up when I left home. Soon, I was too hot, but I didn't want to stop to take off any clothing; I unzipped as best I could.
Then I started to get thirsty and found out the top of my water bottle had frozen so I had no water.
I was pretty thirsty by time I got to work...

cold on the westside? We haven't ridden in temps that warm in 6 weeks The only issues you should run at your temps are icing up of your drivetrain. Fixable with some good lubing.
It was so cold that...
...I couldn't feel my feet or man parts after 30 minutes
...My water bottles froze at the nozzle at 45 minutes, so I had to pull over and remove the lids during water breaks for the remaining 2.5 hours
...the coldness of my man parts prevented me from detecting horrible chaffing. My next order of business it to search the forums for a solution and preventive measures, because I am in bad shape today.
We don't have that sort of problem down here in OZ,its 35c-40c(sorry)(no I'm not!).

Hah! Ever try to kidnap someone from a moving bicycle? Doesn't work too well.
Edit: I am glad that situation had a good ending, although that little girl has a lot of explaining to do.

I don't have any great stories, other than when I leave work I can't really feel my hands until about a mile from home.
However, I noticed that one of my rhododendrons has had a lot of cold related damage to the leaves. It's never done that before, so this is a good clue that it's been really, really cold  .

I didn't wear my glasses this morning and my eyes were freezing (literally). The first time I pulled over I thought I just had something in my eye, though I couldn't find it and it just went away. Started up again and had something in my eye again almost immediately.
Then I put my glasses on ;)
The ride home was pretty awesome I must say. We had a very light and fluffy snowfall taking place in the valley. Riding through a freshly coated landscape with those big flakes reflecting in my helmet light, cutting a virgin path in the trail.
Oh yes, it was a good night ride.

Yup. She fessed up to it a few days later. Poor girl already suffering from some parental attention deficit disorder. I think they are going after the parents for some restitution. They better all get some counseling before she does something a lot worse.
