Why does my 57cm 1999 Specialized Allez Comp (non-compact) ride MUCH smoother than my locally made 58cm (also non-compact) Dedacciai 7003 frame? Both have the same Kinesis Airfoil alu fork, and almost identical components (same wheels, tyres, and seat pole).

Did Specialized use 6000 series alu on this model, and if so, could that be the difference? Could it be geometry?

geometry has a lot to do with the comfort of a ride. a longer wheelbase, even by a centimetre, will yield a much more compliant frame, as will a longer top tobe. but you have to bear in mind that the are so many variable involved in ride comfort -- the wheels, the tires, the tire pressure, the handlebar and stem. unless you've controlled those variables [ie. ridden both bikes with the same wheels], it's impossible to know.

... okay... i just read the last two sentences of your post. i'd suggest that the main difference would be the geometry.
