My 1989 Alex Moulton frame needs a repaint. The Alex Moulton is the 17" wheeled bike with the Reynolds 531 space frame made from small diameter tubes that are probably from the seat stays of a "normal" bike. I have a few questions:
1. Is it safe to sandblast a frame like this? There is a local powder coating shop that sandblasts bicycles in preparation for the powder coat. I have heard that sandblasing can be risky on a conventional 531 bike and cause the tubes to warp. Of course, the powder coating shop says "no problem but no promises either on used bikes".
2. Is there any specific bicycle frame painter in Southern California that does a powder coat finishing process? The Alex Moulton frame does not have lugs or other fancy details to justify anything other than a single color frame, so I thought powder coating would be the most durable option.
3. As an adjunct to the above question, is powder coating the most durable paint option?
