Fifty Plus (50+) - Warm one

I'm glad the Tour Down Under finished on sunday, because we're facing a warm one this week.

Max temperature predicted for today (tues) - 41C (that's 106F)
Wed - 41
Thurs - 41
Fri - 39
Sat - 39
and so on. There's a mild cool change expected early next week but that could easily disappear in this sort of pattern. Last year, we started a week like this and wound up with 15 straight days over 37 (98.7F)

Ah well, guess I'll be riding the short route to work (ie, park at the bottom of the hill so I don't have to climb it on the way home).

Living in southern Arizona we face the same temps every summer. Warmest I've commuted to work: 117 degrees with 2% humidity.

An ice storm is just setting in this evening. It is forecast to last until Wednesday morning.

It's not as cold as it is up north for Cranky and TSL, but we're apt to lose electrical power. The roads have a thin coating of ice already. At home, I have a fireplace and wood. Up here, I'm in an all-electric apartment. This ain't lookin' good:(:mad:

Couldn't agree more. I get tired of heat and humidity, but I can live with it. After a few days of even what passes for cold around here, I've had enough. I can't imagine living somewhere where where it really gets cold and stays that way.

The heat I'm talking about is a very dry, oven like heat. Our UV levels are extremely high (higher than equivalent latitudes in the northern hemisphere) so even without the heat, you're getting burnt. This hot spell is driven by winds coming off our inland areas, winds that are very hot themselves (no relief in them) and very dry - our state has been often labelled as the driest state in the driest continent on earth, and that's reflected in the heat. It's like climbing into an oven.

Having said that, once you get used to it, it's easier to bear than humidity but by cripes you dry out. We typically get two or three really hot spells like this one each year with 'cool change's where it settles into the 30s between them. One of the predictions for global warming (for us) is a steady rise in these temperatures and a flattening out of the patterns combined with less rain. As it is, we're in our third year of drought (water restrictions for the last three summers) and that was only preceded by one or two years of good rain after a drought of, I think, seven years.

Sydney is wetter and more humid than us and from there on northwards (towards the equator for you lot standing on your heads), it just gets more and more tropical ie, more humid.

Even in winter our winds come off the southern ocean and thus are dry.

It's actually a lovely, moderate climate, with this coming week one of the peaks - in winter we might be forced to endure minimum temperatures as low as 10C. Great for riding, but it pays to wear something under your helmet if you don't want a rather strange mottled sun burn pattern on your scalp :eek:

It hit 43.2C (110) yesterday and they're predicting 44 for today.

Call me a woose if you like but I'm shortening the riding part of my commute to 5km for today ... and parking the car under some big trees.

It just hit 45.5 (114F) ... and they've finally fixed the airconditioner in the office block I'm working in. There's a firebug running loose in the northern suburbs (4 fires lit by him yesterday) and I'm slowly losing interest in work.

I'm tempted to start re-reading your threads complaining about the cold.

Maximum today was 45.7C (113F I think) - that's the highest temp in Adelaide in 70 years and only the third highest on record! They're predicting worse for tomorrow and if that doesn't get there, it'll be the same the day after. We're expecting a 'cool change' next week where the temp will drop into the high thirties.

At 10pm it was still 39. It's now after 11pm and down to 37.

Yep, I'll be 'sleeping' with the house wide open but even if I can get inside to match the outside temperature, it'll still be over 30.

I'm so glad it's summer, I'd hate to be having all that lovely, cool snow you lot are complaining about. And yes, I'll be riding to work tomorrow ... some of the way (only the last 5km methinks).

I was camping in the Black Hills several years ago. Temperatures were in the upper 90sF but only 20% humidity (vs 90% back home). It was hot, but quite tolerable. The group in the next campsite was from Utah, and they couldn't stand it -- "this is unbearable -- the humidity must be at least 20%!" :)

:twitchy:Well whilst it cooled down here over the last couple of days to Mid to high 30 deg. Celcuis, it's cranked up again today and currently sitting at 40.7 :twitchy: and RH of 18%.

Sat'dy will be 38 or so and then finally getting below 30 for the first time in two weeks.

:giver: Back to topic. Just cooled down to 40.2 @ 11%. Mind you, I'd rather that than the 1000 + mm of rain in FNQ :eek:

It's flooding on the wrong side of the Great Dividing Range - on the eastern side, it runs off into the sea while on the western side (80% of Australia), we're suffering a drought. Give all the unemployed a shovel and dig a canal through the mountains :D
