BMX - Recommended Dirt Bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey fellas,
I want to start riding trails to improve my bike handling skills and have a laugh in the woods; I am looking for a decent dirt bike for around $300-350 - about £250-300. I'm not going to be doing tail whips or bar spins, so ORGY equipped bikes need not apply - unless they're good frames, in which case I'll strip it off. I currently ride XC, cyclocross and a fixed on the road. Any decent recommendations would be greatfully received.

Well I am not familiar with what they carry over there in Nottingham for BMX so tell me what your options are.

I'm open to internet ordering, so that could include any of the following:
DK, Dragonfly, Eastern, Federal, Fit, Fly, Freeagent, GT, Haro, Hoffman, Huffy, KHE, Mongoose, Nirve, Ruption, Twenty, WeThePeople
My original idea behind the post was to collect recommendations then I would look into availability in the UK and UK prices where appropriate.

ya i got a 2001 schwinn supermatic. Perfect condition. It's got the oryg gyro but the fframe is extremely light and is big. It's good for just about any type of bmx riding. Ill sell it for about 250$ us and i really gotta get rid of it afast. I've had it for the past year and love it but im out of the sport now. I got a new bike and need to get rid of it so ya

As I'm in the UK, I don't think I'll take you up on that one.

Free Agent, Huffy, Mongoose, Nirve, and possibly haro and Ruption, are bad choices.
Most any frame/complete bike will do fine. If you're only doing dirt jumping, you might want a TT length, longer than what is normal for your height.
There is nothing wrong with a gyro (Not orgy, that's a sexual act, and oryg is a model of gyro), once set up properly with dual cables through, they often perform better, and perform better longer, than single cable set ups.

Ok, I'm 5'11" what sort of top tube length should I be looking at normally, then I can look for one that is an inch or so longer.

Please excuse my poor terminology :o ; well I'll leave it on if I end up with a bike that has one.
Thanks for reply, narrowed it down a little!

20.5 or 20.75 seems average for you height. I wouldn't go a full inch longer. You will feel a big difference. I'm 5'6", and the TT on my bike is 20". Going up even a 0.5" is a huge difference. Most importantly is to find a bike that feels comfortable, and not get too stuck on what's correct for your height. If it feels good, get it.

Well, thanks to yours and other replies I have narrowed it down to a DK Four Pack (20.5" TT), Hoffman Rythmn EL2 (20") and last resort a GT Thumper (20.75"). Current favourite is the DK, but I'll wait till I've tried them. Thanks again for your replies.
