Well today I went off on my first group ride. I was a bit apprehensive, because I don't have:

A good bike
Bike shorts
Bike jersey
Pedal clips
Fast tires
and on and on and on...

So I wasn't sure what they were going to think of me or what was going to happen. I learned quite a lot about riding in a paceline (which is darn fun and sure makes it easier on you in the wind), shifting a bit more efficiently, and etc. I kept with them through what I considered to be a pretty tough pace through 11 miles or so, but then I dropped off the back of the pack. I managed to muster up the guts to spin up to 24mph trying to reconnect, and one guy dropped back and pulled me back on once I got close, so that was cool. But shortly after that, about a mile, we started up a short climb and everyone stood up for it, including me, and my calf just completely locked up in a cramp. So I just died right there, because calf cramp or no calf cramp, I just couldn't hack it. The sense of impending doom had been creeping up on me for about 5 miles, so the cramp was just a convenient out.

Overall it was a fun experience, and next Saturday I am going to make them work just a little bit harder to drop me.

Stats:
25.5 Miles
1 hour, 43 minutes
Top Speed 37.4mph

Cheers!

Hey Jason!

You should be satisfied with your performance! It takes a lot of guts to get out and do that! I have yet to get the guts to go riding with a group like that. Good going!

Great job! I did my first club ride a couple of weeks ago. Wanted to ride with the B group (15 mph) but none showed up so I went with the C/D group (20+ mph). Hung with them for 8 miles then I did a 1 mile pull in front and blew up. 2 guys were nice enough to drop back and pull me into the rest stop a mile 15. On the way back in, I got dropped again on a short hill, once again someone dropped back and pulled me the next 10 miles. I really felt bad for ruining his ride. At the parking lot, some of the guys gave me some pointers like don't pull for so long, just do a short pull and drop back.

This week I rode with them again. Made it to mile 13 at the bottom of a small hill. That was my goal. 22+ mph all the way. Even hung with the group over the small hill on the way back. Got dropped when the pace hit 25+ and rode back in alone. I'll show up every week all spring and summer until I can finish with the group.

For anyone thinking of doing a club ride for the first time - just do it. I've found cyclist to be the friendlist group of people. The C/D riders I rode with could have jsut left me to find my way back but didn't. They offered tips, discussed different routes in the area, and I think enjoyed having a newbie around to teach.

Get out and ride!
