Northeast - Upcoming NYC area rides

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm dreaming of the Spring and salt-less roads. So far I'm definitely, tentatively in for the 5 Boro Bike Tour in May and the "good" Montauk ride (century...possibly even 145miles if I get enough riding in before then).
What rides are you all waiting for?

i remember last year like in august where they close down the streets of manhattan for only bikes, rollerskaters, walkers etc. does any know what website is it?

That was summer streets. I think Transportation Alternatives was behind that.
Right now I'm really looking forward to the Bloomin Metric (http://www.soundcyclists.com/BloominMetric.htm) on May 17th. I did it last year and that 3000+elevation gain really kicked my butt so I'm hoping to be in better shape this time around.

It was definitely a blast to mosey down Park Ave. To be honest I actually had a better time as a pedestrian rather than on a bike.

Great list Matty. I think a lot of these rides are on Sundays, which is usually tough for me so I have to be pretty selective. Any reason you prefer the North Fork ride over Montauk?
I also want to hang with you cats and head up to Bear Mountain or at least Nyack/Piermont. Let's try to get that going again.

Yes, I prefer the North Fork Century over the Montauk Century because it starts and ends at the same place, so there is no trucking of bikes all over the place. Was kind of a drag going back to Penn station and seeing my brand new bike (I had it 3 days) under a pile of bikes and un-attended. I would still do the Montauk, but I still like starting and ending "by the car" better.

I think I will ride the Five Boro Bike Tour and The Ride to Montauk this year.
Just got some email from Glenn that he's swapping the dates for the Ride to Montauk (tentatively 8/30) with the Northfork Century (now 6/14.) This is probably a good thing for the Montauk Ride since it will no longer be clustered around other rides to Montauk.

The registration for the North Fork Century opens TODAY at 11:00am. Who's in??? The date of the ride has changed to June 14, so check your calendars.

So what's up with Montauk? Last year 5BBC and Glenn were biting at the bit trying to get riders registered by New Years. This time around, we're half way through February and neither one has opened registration. Glen mentioned some kind of confusion with the LIRR for his June date, which required him to switch but the 5BBC site only says "Save This Date." There's no way to register or explanation about why it hasn't been set up yet.

i know there are rides out in long island...but are there any rides in the hampton, south hampton, east hampton areas? i always want to check out those millionaires dollar homes like p. diddy, martha stewart, seinfeld etc.
Glen's Ride to Montauk and 5BBC's Montauk Century both pass Jerry Seinfeld's mansion of Further Lane. They may pass Lasata where Jackie Kennedy Onassis spent her childhood. But I think the former residences for Martha Stewart, Calvin Klein and Grey Gardens are off the route and I don't even know where Diddy's Southampton digs might be. The problem is that neither of these rides actually tell you whose mansion is where so you may want to do some research.
There's another one called the The Mansion Ride (http://www.mansionride.com/index.html) that includes mansions in Nassau County. Or you could just download some bookmarks from the Google EarthCommunity (http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/) and make your own tour.

I have to say checking out the prices of some of these events, I'm inclined to do more club rides. I'm a member of the NYCC. It's cheap to join and they have at least a ride or two scheduled for every weekend for all levels. The 5BBC does as well. If you're in the NYC area, they're both worth checking out.
I got sick of the 5 Borough Bickering Club and let my membership lapse. Maybe I'll check out the NYCC...

I was looking at the 5BBC because it has lots of rides on weekends that interest me. As far as the big event prices, I don't mind. I like the the rides and what they have to offer, and so I don't mind paying.
For now, I think I'm going to limit myself to day rides that are no more than $50 or $60, not including transportation. That still leaves me with a good number of rides to choose from.

I have a feeling that, due to the poor economy, you're going to find the more expensive rides a lot less crowded.
As for myself, I'll do as many rides as I can fit into my schedule without my wife changing the locks on the front door. :D
My first event is to be a riding marshal for the 5 Boro.
I marshalled last year and had a great time.
Yeah, I know it's a bit claustrophobic riding with 30,000 others but I hope to see some of you there.

i agree...with the bad economy...who knows who may need those extra $$$ one day....some of these rides are too rich for my blood.
i got an idea, maybe we should organize some of these rides ourselves? what do u guys think?

The 5BBC wasn't for me either, but I do think they offer alot of rides for beginning road cyclists. If you haven't ridden in groups or gone on any kind of organized ride, the 5BBC is a good place to start in my opinion.
Once you're comfortable riding in groups and can maintain a steady pace over a distance, you might want to check out the NYCC.
That said, there are riders of all levels in both clubs and lots of people belong to both of them.

As a member of the NYCC I can tell you that anyone can join a posted club ride.
The only requirements are that you wear a helmet, no headsets, no aerobars and have a pump and tube on the ride. Same goes for 5BBC.
The NYCC does offer what I would call faster longer and more challenging rides with fewer breaks.
This coming week the NYCC will start their SIG/STS series which means that if you aren't part of those programs there will be fewer group rides until just before Memorial Day (I think). The SIG/STS is scheduled for Saturdays with Sunday as the rain date. The 5BBC starts their Montauck training series soon and they can be a mix of faster or slower paced rides that will get progressivly longer.
In anycase, I agree that doing a club ride for 60-100 miles cost you nothing and allows to keep the bike off atruck makes sense. In fact you can eat what you want during the stop break and use a real bathroom.
I enjoy the fact that I don't have to leave my home at 4:30 to ride a century.
Join any club that catches your fancy, the dues are SOOOO cheap you will get back 10X the value.
I plan to lead a few rides, hope to see ya'll.

As of 2 days ago, registration for 5BBT stood at 14,000 --almost exactly double the registration at this time last year.
Woud not be surprised if it sold out within the month, so for those considering this event, it is time to act.

I have never seen a cyclist sent home because they did not have a tube or pump.
Then again, I bring extra so that the knucklehead doesn't get lynched by the group.

Planning to do the same as the last few years - Bike New York and New York Century.
The rest of my rides will be local (see the Mid-Atlantic Forum for details) ;)
I plan on doing the 5 borough bike tour an May 3rd. This will be my first time doing this ride. Any suggestions on the best way to get there? I live in Bellport, NY. I was thinking of taking the train from ronkonkoma to penn and riding to the start that way I don't have to worry about parking the car or driving home. Maybe we could get a local group (Bellport, Patchogue, Shirley areas) together and meet at the train station.

Should be no problem to take the LIRR in. That's what I do, albeit at 4AM. I've only taken the LIRR home once (otherwise ridden back to Great Neck) and it was really crowded with bikes. Late afternoon weekend trains are probably fairly crowded anyhow, so it would be interesting to hear any other forumites' experiences. LIRR is supposed to go easy on bike rules on 5BBT day, but as usual any conflict comes down to individual train crew personnel.

Nice list Matty. Can you add the Nassau Mansion link to the first post?
Due to cycling withdrawal and a gain of 10lbs, I have signed up for the 5-Boro, 5BBC Montauk Century, North Fork Century and Ride to Montauk.
Time to stretch that IT band.
That was summer streets. I think Transportation Alternatives was behind that.
yes. Haven't heard anything yet on whether they will do it again (I hope so!) but Sunnyside (http://sunnysidebid.org/) will have a block closure every weekend in August and there are some other activities going on this summer.
Yes, I prefer the North Fork Century over the Montauk Century because it starts and ends at the same place, so there is no trucking of bikes all over the place. Never did Montauk yet but I love the NF - doing again this year and staying at the Drossos. Miniature golf!

These sometimes show up on Craigslist, (http://newyork.craigslist.org/bik/) a week or two before the ride, and after people have received their packets.
Oh there are already two requests posted for $60 each.
