I don't understand the reason for your question. Many people on this site (including me) have toured Europe. Never have I felt a need to get on a 'highway'; by this I assume ya mean limited access roads. Just where will you be touring that you would even consider such a thing?

i am asking this because i plan to make a tour through the Balkans. and as you may know it is not a very secure region, so if it is possible to get in the highways that would be much more secure.

AHHH!! the Balkans. I went thru there on my world tour a few years back. I was on the coast road most of the time, but went inland for a look at the mountains from time to time as well. I had no problem with any security issues, though I was not in areas that were having problems at the time.
I don't think Highways would solve security problems, anyway. In any case I had no problems in Slovenia, Croatia, and a small sliver of Bosnia/HErzogovina. Good luck!

great. can you please send me or post the route you went through. and by the way were the roads in good condition and with what kind of bike were you in the tour?

I am from Bulgaria and I have never seen bikes on the highways. Moreover, most of the organized crimes against passing foreigners happen exactly on the highways. The other main roads are so busy that i think it might be a bad idea to ride on them. Of course, you should expect a fair amount of imperfections in the roads in my country.

I have rode in three countries..Spain,France, Italy..Not the Balkans...My advice get a bike oriented road guide to the countries involved...
In the Loire, I found myself getting lost a couple of times...And ending up on E highways( national routes), I think they were called... Whereas, they do have wide margins, the drag of the speeding trucks, don't find yourself there. Worse than our freeways..
With plannning you will enjoy your routes, instead of clutching your handlebars with white knuckles...
Seems, bikes are allowed most everywhere, but plan your trip so that it is enjoyable..The back country roads, you will feel you are in bike heaven. Several books on riding in Europe can be found in "Cyclocross' printed by "Adventure Cycling."

Are you referring to a motorway, or a carriageway, or just a normal road?

Yes.
oh...you wanted an answer... :D
It's usual here to just jump in front of a train if you're interested in killing yourself. Bad for the clean-up crew, and ugly for the train driver, but much quicker if you're interested in killing yourself.
You don't really want to do that, in other words. See my private message for more.
