Has anybody ridden along the stretch between Weston and South Bay. Is there a good shoulder (or an actual bike lane)? What is the condition of the road? Too many trucks? etc. etc. I am just looking for a place to ride besides A1A. Thanks for all the help.

I'm pretty sure it does have a shoulder the whole way, but maybe look at Google Earth satellite images to make sure. Definitely lots of trucks on that road.

I haven't ridden it, but I've driven that stretch a number of times. It's a four-lane split highway (two lanes on each side divided by a grass median) that cuts through sugarcane and phosphate (I think?). The surface is maybe B quality and there's a bit of a shoulder, but there's debris all over that's kicked up from the semi trucks that drive on the dikes bordering the highway. I really wouldn't recommend riding that route.

As a matter of fact, I rode it this past Sunday. It's actually a popular route for peeps in West Broward. There is a nice wide shoulder ~8 ft. and it's pretty clean. There are bits of tire and debris but it's not bad, just pay attention. Go for it!

If it's a limited-access highway, then in Florida it's illegal for bicycles to ride upon it -- regardless if one does so on the roadway, or on the shoulder.

From the State of Florida Motor Vehicles Statutes:

316.091 Limited access facilities; interstate highways; use restricted.

(1) No person shall drive a vehicle onto or from any limited access roadway except at such entrances and exits as are established by public authority.

(2) Except as provided herein, no person shall operate upon a limited access facility any bicycle, motor-driven cycle, animal-drawn vehicle, or any other vehicle which by its design or condition is incompatible with the safe and expedient movement of traffic.

(3) No person shall ride any animal upon any portion of a limited access facility.

(4) No person shall operate a bicycle on the roadway or along the shoulder of an interstate highway.

(5) A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a moving violation as provided in chapter 318.

St Rd 27 isn't limited access. I-95, I-75 and the Turnpike are. So have at it we ride on 27 from Miami to North Broward all the time, usually every Thursday. JUST DO IT!!

I have ridden this road on group rides many times, but I have not been on any rides that go north of i-75...

Unless you are in a big pack, don't risk it.

what these guys said. I rode it from pines to the south bay, to 84 to weston road.

right at pines area the shoulder is horrible...half of it is covered by dirt/debris, etc. and you basically have to ride the white line. trucks honk at you when your riding the shoulder too:mad:

I know alot of the faster groups ride it during the weekend, etc. and in big packs I wouldn't have any issues, I still ride it though as it makes a great 40 mi loop for me.

speedxl what groups ride on thurs? thurs AM? I'm looking to find the faster groups with racing experience...just did my first crit at brian piccolo and I need ALOT of work.

Like Fordfasterr said its a little wicked crazy past I -75 but still do able if your not nervous about riding with traffic.

Chad they meet down in Medley/Hialeah at a Denny's Restaurant off of st rd 27 and 113st. They meet at around 5:30pm.
The only morning rides that I know are fast in Miami is the Key Biscayne people. I dont know at what time or where they meet but I am sure you can call a bike shop in Miami Like Bike tech or Mac cycles and they can tell you.

Dude, I rode this solo from 75 to South Bay and will never do it again. The shoulder isn't 8' and it isn't clean. Trucks ride the shoulder line far too often - it does help about 5 second later, but it is way dangerous. I won't do it again.

The road from Weston, Fla., to South Bay is U.S. 27 -- and it's locally notorious for head-on collisions or people running off the road into the canals. Yes, quite a few experienced riders do attempt it. Be prepared for lots of big trucks and road debris. This is not a limited-access road, but the traffic is pretty fast. Don't let a novice ride this road. Don't make the ride at night.

A rider was struck by a car and killed on HWY 84 less than a mile from HWY 27 in Weston this past weekend:

http://sheriff.org/about_bso/admin/media/newsdetails.cfm?pk=2779&sType=M

And the shoulder on 84 is as wide, if not wider, than the lanes on 27. So yea, it is dangerous out there.
